British TV personality Julian Clary, whose outrageously campy homosexual public image served him well on a number of quiz and variety programs, was virtually the whole show in the Channel 4 sitcom Terry and Julian. Playing "himself," Clary was cast as the flamboyant roommate of dweebish, straitlaced Terry (Lee Simpson). Sharing a flat in Streatham, this truly odd couple never quite found a common cultural ground, causing Terry no end of trouble with his non-gay friends in general and his somewhat butchy policewoman girlfriend Rene (Kate Lonergan) in particular. Remaining on the air just long enough not to wear out its welcome, the six-episode Terry and Julian (its title a spoof of the venerable BBC sitcom Terry and June) was broadcast from September 11 to October 16, 1992.
