Tragedy strikes in the opening episode of Series 18, when a case becomes personal for one of the Maryhill CID team. A later episode introduces a new face to the show, DCI Matthew Burke (Alex Norton), who would go on to become a staple character of the popular crime drama. DCI Burke gets thrown in at the deep end with a complex arson case, which he chooses to use to test his officers. The final episode of the series, 'The Friday Event', is a two-parter that sees Strathclyde force hunt down a cunning psychopath.
