15 Episodes 2006 - 2007
Creator Steve Franks' comedic entry into the crime-solving genre follows the investigative efforts of fake psychic Shawn Spencer (James Roday) and his childhood pal and sidekick Burton "Gus" Guster (Dulé Hill).\ Though Shawn has top-notch observational skills and the keen instincts necessary to become a detective, he also has a free-spirited, goofy side that prevents him from pursuing a serious career in police work, much to the chagrin of his father Henry (Corbin Bernsen). A former detective, Henry honed his son's talents at a young age and is constantly frustrated by Shawn's carefree view of adult life. Henry's former colleague Interim Chief Karen Vick (Kirsten Nelson), however, sees Shawn as an asset for solving tough cases, even though she's skeptical of his alleged psychic ability, a lie Shawn manufactured after he gave the police a tip that was so accurate he became a suspect. Though Shawn and Gus set up their own detective agency when they realize they can cash in on the lie, Chief Vick often brings the guys in as consultants for tricky cases. Det. Juliet O'Hara (Maggie Lawson) takes the pair's unusual antics in stride, but her partner Carlton Lassiter (Timothy Omundson) does not. He doesn't believe for a second that Shawn is a real psychic and resents Shawn's intrusion into the police work that he takes very seriously. But as Shawn and Gus investigate a series of odd cases, including spelling-bee treachery, murder at a Civil War reenactment, a sorority-house haunting and a case in which the sole witness is a cat, they inevitably produce results, a fact that even Lassiter must begrudgingly admit. Notable Season 1 guest stars include George Takei ("Star Trek"), playing himself in a Comic-Con-based episode; Kurtwood Smith ("That '70s Show"), as Lassiter's former boss with a faltering memory; and Academy Award winner Mercedes Ruehl, as a rookie trainee who finally passed the police-force entrance exam at an advanced age.
