The third season of this medical drama finds Violet (Amy Brenneman) struggling to recover both physically and emotionally from her attack, and she also has trouble bonding with her newborn baby. Family crises affect several of the characters, including Naomi (Audra McDonald) and Sam (Taye Diggs), who learn that their teenage daughter, Maya (Geffri Maya), is pregnant; Dell (Chris Lowell), whose wife and daughter are injured in an explosion; and Addison (Kate Walsh), who makes shocking discoveries about both her father (Stephen Collins) and mother (JoBeth Williams). Addison is also surprised to run into one of her former sisters-in-law, Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone), now working at a nearby hospital.
