Forty of the best home cooks in the country compete to impress acclaimed celebrity chefs Gordon Ramsay and Christina Tosi, and a rotating cast of guest judges comprised of various culinary icons, in order to advance through the competition and earn the coveted MasterChef title. The contenders must out-cook their rivals through each round of competition and distinguish themselves through a variety of events designed to challenge their culinary knowledge, skills, determination, and creativity. Once the winner is crowned, he or she will not only join the elite company of previous MasterChefs, but will also receive a cookbook deal and a $250,000 grand prize. Wolfgang Puck, Aaron Sanchez, Edward Lee, Kevin Sbraga, and Richard Blais guest star.

The 16 remaining home cooks then have 25 minutes each to kill, poach and shell a lobster, with the winner choosing which team he or she will join for the next field challenge. For the second part of the challenge, the contestants prepare lobster tortellini in a seafood broth.
