13 Times ABC Show Titles Made Us Say WTF

What's in a name? A lot when it comes to show titles. Naming a show isn't easy. You want to be brief but convey what the show is about, catchy but not cliché, original but not too out-there, inviting but not alienating. The last one sounds like a no-brainer, but tell that to ABC. For a network nicknamed the Alphabet, it has been the worst title offender in recent years. OK, so I am really not ...

Question: OK, so I am really not feeling Cashmere Mafia or Lipstick Jungle. Do I need to cancel my season passes on these two, or should I give them another shot? Answer: Cancel Cashmere, but let Lipstick linger a few more weeks. Or at the very least through tomorrow's episode, which features both a rollicking guest turn by Lorraine Bracco and an adulterous Kim Raver having sex with a half-naked Robert Buckley. Speaking of the latter, next week the jig is nearly up when they do it on the floor above her magazine's photo shoot. And let's just say there's a window up there. A big window.

What is wrong with you? I ...

Question: What is wrong with you? I loved Cashmere Mafia! It was so real and honest. Looks much better than Lipstick Jungle. Answer: Actually, I found Lipstick (premiering Feb. 7) to be the superior Sex and the City rip-off, but that's not saying much since I loathed Cashmere. With the exception of Lindsay Price's vapid and utterly annoying fashion designer — a role that should've gone to Melinda Clarke — Lipstick's females are more interesting. Come to think of it, Kim Raver's morally conflicted mag editor has more dimensions than all of Cashmere's Barbie dolls combined. Ratings: Gladiators Beat Up on Mafia

A few ratings highlights from this Sunday evening: The last new Desperate Housewives episode in existence delivered 19.77 million total viewers, a drop of 810,000 from Dec. 2. But I'll be damned if Mrs. McCluskey didn't have me sniffling! NBC's American Gladiators averaged 12.04 million over its two-hour premiere, trailing Housewives at 9 in viewers and key demos, then trouncing ABC's Cashmere Mafia at 10 in both measures.  Cashmere Mafia drew 10.72 mil samplers, retaining only 54 percent of the Housewives audience.

Cashmere Mafia, Apprentice Get New Premieres

The "special" premiere of ABC's Cashmere Mafia has been pushed back a few days, from Thursday, Jan. 3, to Sunday the 6th (at 10 pm/ET). The Lucy Liu-starrer then settles into its regular time slot on Wednesday the 9th at 10.Similarly, NBC's The Celebrity Apprentice has had its debut delayed a week, and now launches Thursday, Jan. 10, at 9 pm. So reschedule that big viewing party you know you were planning!

Striking Writers' Hit The Office and Others Hard

Get your scorecards handy, because this is only the beginning of the strike-related fallout you'll wanna keep track of:  Although a location manager for CBS' Cane hired two security guards to help out while the show shot scenes from a long-completed script at a Hollywood cafe, 20 angry writers who were yelling and using a bullhorn brought the production to a halt anyway.  ABC has postponed the debut of its Sex and the City rip-off, Cashmere Mafia to sometime after Jan. 1. The Nov. 27 Dancing with the Stars finale is being expanded to two full hours to fill the void.  Sometime-writer Steve Carell didn't report to The Office yesterday, Rainn Wilson called in sick, and B.J. Novak and Mindy Kaling, who are members of the show's writing staff, were on strike. Casting News: Nine Star Warms Up Mafia Lesbian

New TV Season Is Pretty and Witty... But Less Gay

An annual report by GLAAD says that the coming TV season is less gay than the one prior, with a total of seven series (versus last year's nine) on the five networks regularly featuring lesbian, gay, bi or transgender characters. The study notes that the only new show to feature a non-hetero person is ABC's midseason Cashmere Mafia, in which Bonnie Somerville swings from both sides of the plate.ABC retained its strong lead in featuring LGBT characters, thanks to the likes of Brothers & Sisters, Ugly Betty and Housewives (which this season has a gay couple moving into the nabe). NBC, with The Office's Oscar, is the only other major to showcase a L, G, B or T.Among recurring LGBT characters, ABC boasts six of network TV's 13. Fox has four (all fabulously animated!) and NBC three.No, I don't know in which category Betty's nephew got counted.

Production on Season 5 of Doctor Who has been postponed until 2010, to accommodate David Tennant's stint in the Royal Shakespeare Company's Hamlet, says the U.K.'s Sun.... MySpaceTV is now featuring "Free Earl," a sing-along with the colorful characters of My Name Is Earl. Funny stuff, check it out.... ABC's Cashmere Mafia will sneak-preview Nov. 27, then air Tuesdays at 9 pm starting Dec. 4, once DWTS goes buh-bye.... Rene Balcer, who left the original Law & Order several years ago to develop and exec-produce Criminal Intent, is returning to the mother ship as an e.p. In a statement, Dick Wolf says, "Rene's return signals a creative renaissance... that should carry us closer to my ultimate goal of beating Gunsmoke"  which at 20 seasons holds the record for TV's longest-running drama.... Writer-producer Jeff Rake has inked a new deal with Sony Pictures TV under which he will exec-produce and show-run ABC's mid-season entry, Cashmere Mafia. Per Variety, the gig reunites Rake with Darren Star, with whom he created Fox's The Street.

ABC Announces Its Fall Schedule

Scheduled to debut next season are four new comedy entries  Carpoolers, Cavemen, Miss/Guided and Sam I Am; along with seven new drama series  Big Shots, Cashmere Mafia, Dirty Sexy Money, Eli Stone, Private Practice, Pushing Daisies and Women's Murder Club. The New Fall TV Schedule: Burning Questions

Upfronts week  the near-euphoric annual event where television enthusiasts such as you and I anticipate the new and returning fare heading our way  is upon us.
