Fox Boss: Canceling Back To You Was Tough Decision
Having sitcom stalwarts Kelsey Grammer and Patricia Heaton in starring roles wasn't enough for Fox to bring Back to You back to you, the viewer, for a second season. "This was not an easy decision," said Fox Entertainment chief Kevin Reilly. "But with that kind of top-profile talent and...proximity to [American Idol] in the second half of the season, the expectations were higher."Reilly emphasized Fox is working to develop a live-action comedy franchise, but Back To You didn't seem to fit that bill. "The show did not seem to be strking a chord, and in terms of creative direction...it was a pretty mixed bag," he said. The show did go down with a fight. It got off to a strong start when it debuted last fall, attracting more than nine million viewers. Two episodes that followed Idol in April each brought in more than 12 million sets of eyeballs. Fox Fall: Death Lives On, Back to You Won't Be Back
With the upfronts officially arriving next week, Fox is among the first to unfurl some of its plans. Per the Reporter, the network has renewed 'Til Death for a third cycle yet is not bringing back Back to You. Though the Grammer-Heaton sitcom drew good notices and decent numbers, it's reckoned that production costs ran too high (due to its marquee stars). Also, Fox is giving a series pickup to The Inn, which is described as "Upstairs/Downstairs at a hip New York hotel." Back to You Acknowledges Polish Joke Not Funny
Outraged over a crack made by Fred Willard's oafish Back to You newscaster, that "Bowling is in your Polish blood, like kielbasa and collaborating with the Nazis," Polish-American groups have gotten Fox to vow never to air the clip again. "In no way was this dialogue meant to insinuate any connection between the Polish people and the Nazi movement," the network further said in a statement. "The line was delivered by a character known for being ignorant, clueless and for saying outlandish things. Allowing the line to remain in the show, however, demonstrated poor judgment, and we apologize to anyone who was offended." — Ben Katner
Back to You Moves Forward with Full Season
Fox has given a full-season pickup to the sitcom Back to You, the first of its scripted freshman series to rate such an honor.Thus far this fall, Fox has renewed Kitchen Nightmares for a second run, ordered additional scripts for K-Ville and put the docusoap Nashville on, um, "hiatus." The Next Great American Band, meanwhile, last Friday debuted to dismal numbers.

On Back to You (Wednesdays, 8 pm/ET, Fox), the Kelsey Grammer/Patricia Heaton sitcom vehicle, Fred Willard plays freewheeling sportscaster Marsh McGinley, whose lead foot alarms a coworker tonight when they carpool together. Marsh is the latest in a gallery of grinning goofballs that Willard has given us over the course of a career that spans 40 years. Good News for Back to You, and K-Ville, Too
On the heels of the announcement that Fox has cut back its order for Amy Sherman-Palladino's midseason comedy The Return of Jezebel James from 13 to just seven total episodes (see the Ausiello Report for more) comes word that the network has picked up two additional scripts for the ratings-challenged K-Ville. Variety is also reporting that Kelsey Grammer and Patricia Heaton's Back to You is due for a full-season pickup by Fox, perhaps coming as early as this week.
CBS' Mother, Free Fox Episodes Eye iTunes
Conspicuously MIA from the Apple service for its first two seasons,How I Met Your Mother is suiting up for iTunes starting Tuesday, the morning after the Season 3 premiere airs on CBS. Mother also will be available on Amazon's Unbox.Meanwhile, iTunes is now offering for free the first episodes of Back to You, Kitchen Nightmares and K-Ville, as well as Prison Break, American Dad, Bones and 'Til Death, for two weeks starting the day after their respective premieres.

Wednesday's ratings highlights:• This just in.... Fox's Back to You, starring Kelsey Grammer and Patricia Heaton, premiered to 9.44 million total viewers, winning its 8 pm half hour (in key demos, as well). 'Til Death lost 18 percent of that lead-in audience, drawing 7.76 mil.• CBS' Kid Nation opened its frontier doors to 9.07 million. But did it deserve all the controversy? Vote here. UPDATE: CBS will rebroadcast the Kid Nation opener Saturday at 8 pm.• Last Comic Standing delivered its last laughs to 7.13 mil, besting Kitchen Nightmares (6.64 mil) along the way.• Top Model returned to an audience of 5.15 mil, down just a hair from the previous cycle's opener. Gossip Girl had 3.65 mil talking, matching One Tree Hill's 2006 season premiere and faring a bit better than that Pussycat Doll search.

3:50: Fox upfront. The words still send shivers down my spine. As you recall, the network's presentation last year was widely considered to be the single most grueling upfront in the history of upfrontmanship.
