In Manhattan, Frances Hannon is walking with her dog on the sidewalk when she is kidnapped by two young men, Harry and Handsome. They head to the outskirts of New York and bury her alive in the woods. Then they send the tape to her wealthy husband requesting one-million-dollar ransom. The emotionally disturbed detective Madeline 'Maddy' Foster, who is secretly masochistic and has a drinking problem, is assigned by her husband and captain Tim to investigate the case and they conclude that Frances has only twenty-four hours of oxygen to breath. They succeed to catch Harry that proves to be a mastermind and she has only a few hours to try to find where Frances is. Will she succeed.

United Press International journalist Will Bloom and his French freelance photojournalist wife Josephine Bloom, who is pregnant with their first child, leave their Paris base to return to Will's hometown of Ashton, Alabama on the news that his father, Edward Bloom, stricken with cancer, will soon die, he being taken off chemotherapy treatment. Although connected indirectly through Will's mother/Edward's wife, Sandra Bloom, Will has been estranged from his father for three years since his and Josephine's wedding. On the brink of his own family life beginning, Will does not want to be the kind of father Edward has been to him. One of those stories from Edward's childhood - that he saw his own death in the glass eye of a witch - led to him embracing life since he would not have to fear death knowing when and how it would eventually come. The question is whether Will will be able to reconcile Edward's stories against his real life, either directly from Edward before he dies and/or from other sources, and thus allow Will to come to a new understanding of himself and his life, past, present and future.

Arlene, who lives in the Watergate complex with her single mother, has invited Betsy over this evening to prepare Arlene's "Win a Date with Bobby Sherman" contest entry. Wandering around the complex that evening, they see a man who they don't recognize. On a class field trip to the White House the following day, they see the same man in the White House who they sort of recognize but don't know from where. He, G. Gordon Liddy, afraid that they can tie him to the Watergate break-in, decides to take decisive measures to deal with them. In this administrative high level maneuvering, Betsy and Arlene meet the President himself. To keep an eye on them, Nixon - or Dick as they are allowed to call him - hires them first to walk Checkers, then as youth policy advisors, all in unofficial capacities, and the latter job in name only that is unless he feels the need to institute a policy they recommended just to placate them. But the more that they have access to the White House as a collective, the more they may truly be exposed to the illegal goings-on by the administration. The question becomes if they are astute enough to recognize what they are seeing - they more used to fixating on the likes of Sherman - and know what to do with the information.
