MONSTER'S BALL is a hard-hitting Southern drama tempered by a story of powerful life-changing love. It is the story of Hank (Academy Award winner ®, Billy Bob Thornton), an embittered prison guard working on Death Row who begins an unlikely but emotionally charged affair with Leticia (Academy Award winner ®, Halle Berry), the wife of a man under his watch on The Row.

A young boy and a talented stray dog with an amazing basketball playing ability become instant friends. Rebounding from his father's accidental death, 12-year-old Josh Framm moves with his family to the small town of Fernfield, Washington. The new kid in town, Josh has no friends and is too shy to try out for the school basketball team. Instead he prefers to practice alone on an abandoned court, he befriends a runaway golden retriever named Buddy. Josh is amazed when he realizes that Buddy loves basketball...that is playing basketball...and he is GOOD! Josh eventually makes the school team and Buddy is named the Team Mascot. Josh and Buddy become the stars of halftime. Buddy's half-time talent draws media attention. It isn't until Mary meets agent Leah Miller at a retreat that Mary begins to figure out what she truly wants in life, how to achieve it, and what part she played in the cause of her own problems, not only with Stephen.

Albert's choice of bride is his younger flirtatious co-worker Helen Dawes, who, unknown to Albert, is already in a sexual relationship with brusque, sly Joe Mackins, another co-worker recently arrived to Morrison's. As Albert, Helen, and Joe play their respective games of courtship, Albert might find that what seemed to come naturally to Hubert might be more difficult for him.

At last, we're given the answers to the questions raised by the haunting 1967 Bobbie Gentry song of the same title. Perhaps an indictment of the artificial conventions of society, the film demonstrates the tragic consequences of a young couple's first awkward grapplings with love and sex. As Bobbie Lee says shortly after Billy Joe's lifeless body is dragged from the Tallahatchie River, "What do I know of love... I'm only a child." Yet, there seems little doubt that what she feels for the dead boy is love. Could he have loved her so well?

Unfortunately, Rameses II now rules over the Hebrews with an iron fist, and it will take all of Moses' strength and God's miracles to change the world.
