Andrei, a writer with no children, and Olga, an artist, adopt eight-year-old Ksyusha. The director of the orphanage where the girl grew up turns out to be Irena, Andrei's ex-girlfriend. She still loves him passionately and is determined to win him back at any cost—even if it means destroying his happy family life. Meanwhile, Andrei is writing a fantasy novel about the dark side of St. Petersburg. Within the pages of his book, the city on the Neva transforms into a phantasmagorical world where time stands still and the streets are inhabited by soulless creatures. Suddenly, Ksyusha finds herself in the "dark St. Petersburg" of Andrei's novel, where she meets her mysterious friend Paramon. Numerous dangerous adventures await the protagonists.
