Fragile Marie Doro plays the harried heroine in the gritty melodrama The Lash. The scene is a French fishing village, where Sidonia DuVal (Doro) is ordered by her parents to marry a wealthy man. She refuses, preferring the company of her fisherman sweetheart. For her insolence, Simone is sentenced to a public flogging. Just as her back is bared and the whip is wielded, our heroine is rescued by her boyfriend. Their subsequent marriage, however, is anything but idyllic, and when Simone discovers that her husband has been unfaithful, it is she who spitefully applies the lash to his back. This done, she returns to her home village, where unfortunately she is still under sentence to be flogged. Once again, her young husband, now properly chastened, comes to her rescue, this time armed with legal documents which effectively abolish the practice of public lashing.
