Mathilde is captured, having hid her radio, and questioned by German Colonel Krieger, whose wounded leg she dresses. She is freed for lack of evidence but Krieger wants her observed. Krieger has requisitioned the chateau owned by Liz's childhood friend Claudine, where Liz arrives unannounced, due to a letter going astray, but Claudine is quick to play along with her friend's new identity and allows her to stay with her. Colin suspects that concrete and ammunition are being brought ashore at the port.
Episode 5

When Liz goes down with a fever, Claudine delivers a message to Mathilde in her place. The wireless messages are dogged by interference and Cad decides to recall Liz to tell him what is actually happening. Kit, who has fallen for her and cares about her safety, endorses this. However Claudine learns from Therese, a collaborator and Krieger's mistress, that the Germans have found out that a plane will arrive to collect Liz and replace her with a male agent and she tells Mathilde, who is able to contact Cad. He aborts the operation. Krieger is thwarted but he realises that Claudine is helping the British agents and threatens to hand her over to the Gestapo unless she spies for him.

When he finds out where she has been, he is angry with her for leaving their little daughter, Vicky. Her replacement in France is explosives expert Nigel Piggott. Liz visits Mathilde's family to assure them that all is well. Her grandfather is aware of her undercover work but her nervous mother is fearful when she learns of it. Pressurised by Krieger, Claudine identifies her as a radio operator. After sharing an intimate moment with Colin - to avoid capture - she is eventually caught by the Germans.

Claudine, ashamed of her betrayal, tells Kit of Marianne's capture, added to which Lois is convinced that Mathilde has been replaced by a German radio operator. False messages are relayed from London but the results are inconclusive, so as a consequence Liz, wholly against her husband's wishes, returns to France.

Claudine is arrested but Krieger is sent to the Russian front for his failure in capturing the British spies, as Mathilde and Liz arrive back in England.
