Episode 2
Abe has a plan ... which is to say, the Olivias have a plan into which Abe has been drafted on board. Notwithstanding the fact that he proposed only a couple of weeks ago, the plan is for him to propose again - but this time, in a media-friendly way. The Olivias, who think it will 'really boost engagement' if the public can see the surprise on Freya's face, have it all worked out; all that's needed is a diversion to keep Freya occupied while they set up. Enter Ty, who has offered / appointed herself as a mediator for a ( hopefully ) reconciliatory conversation between Freya and Jo at a local pub. It doesn't get off to the best of starts, as neither party acknowledges a need to apologise. Freya cites Jo's recent dereliction of duty under already less than impressive circumstances, stressing that if she is to let Jo back into her life, she has to be sure that Jo won't pull her 'signature move': disappearing when she's actually needed. A case in point, says Freya, was their trip to London in the summer of 2021. For Freya, dating had been the specific mission statement ( this being where the 'Aperol Spritz' safe-word came into being ). However, having stood by through a string of disastrous dates in which Aperol Spritz featured regularly, Jo woke her Biblically hung-over friend one morning and asked Freya to accompany her to see her grandmother, who Jo hadn't seen for some time, but Freya said she would do it 'next time'. Back in the present, Jo berates Freya for having bailed on visiting her grandmother, which was all Jo wanted to do on that trip. She says Freya never gets what really matters to her because Freya's needs always come first. Freya says she hadn't realised Jo felt that way; if she had, she would have dropped everything and come. Ty desperately wants this to be a 'moment' ( not least because time is marching on ), but the girls are not feeling it at all - in fact, to Ty's consternation, they take this opportunity to order another round. As Ty goes to the bar, Jo says that Freya knew how much her grandmother meant to her, and reveals for the first time that on the day Freya was too hung over to go with her, Jo ended up going to visit her grandma alone only to discover that she'd died - a month earlier. This, we discover, was the day Abe and Jo first met, when a disconsolate Jo walked into a pub and queue-jumped in front of him to order a drink. In the brief exchange that followed, the foundations of the ongoing friction between them were firmly established. Having been served first, Jo noticed Freya sitting alone and went to join her, only to discover that Abe was in fact Freya's date. Jo immediately invoked the 'Aperol Spritz' clause, which Freya misconstrued, whispering behind her hand that she was actually fine and didn't need bailing out. Jo explained that she used the 'safe word' for her own benefit rather than for Freya's, but Freya clearly didn't get it and Jo stormed out. However, Freya and Abe hit it off, neither dissuaded by the other's perceived shortcomings, and this proved to be the beginning of the relationship that led them to where they are today. After the date, however, Freya and her PA returned to the flat to discover that Jo had upped and left. Meanwhile, back at the park, the Livs suggest to Abe and Levi that a practise run might not be a bad idea. Whilst Abe stumbles uneasily through his scripted but seemingly almost entirely unrehearsed speech, one of the Livs tells him he has to go down on one knee, even though it had been his intention to remain standing throughout. With just a hint of exasperation, Abe reminds them that he and Freya are, after all, already engaged, and any reaction from her to this gesture is likely to be 90% confusion; unfazed, the Livs say that to the viewers, confusion will still read as surprise. At that moment, one of the Livs spots what she believes to be Freya and Jo in the distance and orders everyone to their positions, including the dance troupe hired for the occasion, who launch into their routine to the tune of Snow Patrol's 'Just Say Yes'. They're about 30 seconds in when Abe realises that the wheelchair-bound woman and her carer are not in fact Freya and Jo. As an ever-more-frustrated Abe texts Ty to ask where she is, Freya tells Jo that if their friendship is to continue, Jo will need to learn to be more honest about how she feels. Jo, in turn, says that Freya has to be a little less selfish. As they each digest and acquiesce to these difficult truths, Ty sees her opportunity, and whilst praising them for the 'brilliant work' they've done, informs them that they are leaving the pub - right now. After their hurried departure, the threesome are walking through the park ( for no apparent reason that Freya can fathom ), when Freya notices the Olivias, Abe and Levi. Caught off guard, Abe stumbles erratically into his speech, and Freya demands to know what's going on before realising he is about to propose, which strikes her as odd since they're already engaged. He admits the Olivias made him do it as part of the whole 'wedding campaign'; Freya, however, says she 'kinda hates it', whereupon Abe says that he actually kinda hates it too. While he's at it, he adds, he also hates the fact that while he is constantly trying to make steps toward their future, Freya seems to be unpicking it all as she goes along - and not least, for the third time of asking, why is Jo there? The thing is, says Freya, if she is in this, Jo is in it too, at which Abe reminds her that he wants to marry her - Freya - not Jo, and certainly not both of them together. Having seemingly reached an impasse, he asks Freya whether she's going to say yes, or what ...? In fairness, there was no mention of it being a good plan .
