Season 5 of the historical drama depicts the aftermath of King Ragnar's (Travis Fimmel) death: After establishing a stronghold in England, his surviving sons are at war with each other, with Ivar (Alex Høgh) claiming the Kingdom of Kattegat for himself, supported by his brother Hvitserk (Marco Ilsø) and against his other brother Ubbe (Jordan Patrick Smith). Meanwhile, Bjorn (Alexander Ludwig) explores northern Africa trying to fulfill his destiny. As the season progresses, new tensions arise, brought forward by the introduction of warrior priest Bishop Heahmund (Jonathan Rhys Meyers).
