Miss Sharp in the Presence of the Enemy

Orphaned and penniless but clever Becky Sharp leaves Miss Pinkerton's academy and is taken in by kindly former classmate Amelia Sedley and her wealthy family. She soon bewitches Amelia's lumpen brother Jos, an official in colonial India, whilst Amelia's betrothal to dashing soldier George Osborne is observed by his loyal friend William Dobbin. Jos leaves Becky, who reluctantly accepts a post as governess to the children of dissolute member of parliament Sir Pitt Crawley.

Miss Sharp Begins to Make Friends

Becky soon wins over Sir Pitt's daughters and the old man himself, who makes her his secretary. Pious elder son Bute and his sour-faced wife are not impressed by her but Bute's handsome brother, army captain Rawdon, is as is Sir Pitt's sister Matilda, who takes Becky as her companion. Amelia, however, starts to doubt George's commitment to her and turns to Dobbin for advice.

However news that Napoleon Bonaparte is waging war in Europe overtakes everybody with Becky proposing to Amelia that they accompany their soldier husbands to the continent.

Incensed by George's secret marriage to the impoverished Amelia his father disinherits him, despite Dobbin's efforts to intervene, though he seems to be more concerned about the loss of money than affection for his wife. In Belgium Amelia is befriended by the down-to-earth wife of Major O'Dowd whilst Becky flirts with the top brass to further Rawdon's career. Since George is amongst those who are smitten by her she makes an enemy of her former friend. She also makes plans for her own future should Rawdon fail to survive the inevitable forthcoming battle - Waterloo.

Becky capitalizes on the civilian panic in Brussels by selling a frightened Jos her horses to allow him to escape but Amelia refuses to go with him. The French are defeated at Waterloo with Dobbin distinguishing himself but there are many casualties and George's father puts Amelia in an impossible situation. Returning to England Becky learns that the late Matilda Crawley has cut Rawdon and herself out of her will and starts to make contingency plans for themselves and their son Rawley, courtesy of the powerful Lord Steyne.
