Beth and Eric host a barbecue where greedy Christine demands the best drinks and Cathy boasts about the cruise she went on with Colin and invites Beth and Eric to join them on their next trip. However Beth wants to put the money towards a flat for Ian and Jaz so Cathy turns to Christine, who has received six grand on a PPI windfall. Christine is half-convinced until Jaz points out the flaw in the invitation, leading to Cathy making a hurried if explosive exit.

Ian makes the mistake of bumping into Christine and Sophie whilst shopping for Jaz's vegetarian option, resulting in them asking themselves to the meal. Nervous about returning to work after illness Jaz locks himself in the toilet but is coaxed out after which dinner is served but Cathy's outburst and attempt to prove she is still sexy drive Beth to taking her dinner to the toilet to eat it in peace.

Colin's foul-mouthed father Willie comes to celebrate his seventy-ninth birthday and soon outdoes Christine in rudeness. Cathy gets drunk and leaves the catering to Beth but when Colin produces his father's old accordion Willie perks up and accompanies a group dance though he declines to stay the night.

With Sophie in tow Christine bursts in, wanting to use Beth's computer to order a Barney-boo buggy on line and commandeers Jaz to explain why her own computer is malfunctioning. Colin and Eric are sporting kilts as they prepare to fly to Latvia to watch a football match, causing much mirth, and a harassed Beth orders everybody out so she can go to the hair-dressers after Christine has got everybody ringing around different store for the buggy - which they obtain but Sophie ultimately rejects. At the airport Colin tricks Eric into proving that he is a real Scotsman.

Cathy and Colin are off on a skiing trip so Beth and Eric are hoping for a quiet Christmas together. However an air traffic controllers' strike soon puts paid to that. With Sophie also marooned abroad Christine and grand-daughter Madison join the party along with Ian and new boyfriend Gordon, whom Christine inadvertently outs to his father on the phone. With tiny food portions and fractious guests hopefully Colin's surprise for Cathy and Eric's Santa act can lift spirits.
