Edward Binns starred in this short-lived but critically-acclaimed series as Roy Brenner, a 20-year veteran detective in the New York City police department. A trusted investigator, Brenner is frequently handed sensitive and confidential cases, often involving other members of the department. He also has a son, Ernie (James Broderick, who is on the force. And as his son advances in the department and time moves on, Brenner is facing the same kinds of questions that dog many "career men." Does he want to put more time into what he's been doing for two decades, or take early retirement and start something new, including the possibility of a new marriage, if the right woman comes along? Or does he want to try to be a boss, moving up in the department to the place where policy is made? Or does he want to continue working cases, even as the criminals seem to be getting ever younger? The half-hour series placed an emphasis on character over action and violence, and resembled in many respects the original 30-minute incarnation of Naked City (which premiered a year earlier). Like Naked City, Brenner was shot in New York City, though its makers usually avoided using familiar landmarks or streetscapes for its settings -- and like Naked City, it is possible to spot lots of up-and-coming actors, then doing mostly theater work, who would become better known in subsequent decades, including Robert Webber, Frank Campanella, Jerry Stiller, Dick O'Neill, and Milton Selzer. The program was a production of Herbert Brodkin, who was also responsible for Playhouse 90 and The Defenders, among numerous other high-quality series of the era.
A couple of female detectives team up on the streets of Chicago. One's a savvy veteran, the other an ambitious rookie. The two of them didn't click, and neither did the series: it was cancelled after three episodes.
