Episode 1
The Undoing

British oncologist Jonathan lives in Manhattan with wife Grace Fraser, a successful psychologist, and their bright teen son Henry, who attends the elite Reardon School. Grace is on the Reardon parents fundraisers committee that plans an auction event, where she meets enigmatic Elena Alves, who brought her baby, whom Grace encounters repeatedly the next several days: once in a gym bathroom, where a nude Elena thanks her "kindness" by not ignoring her and later at the auction itself, where Grace finds Elena crying in the bathroom. Leaving the event, Elena kisses Grace on the lips in the elevator. The next day, Elena's grossly-mutilated body is discovered in her artist's studio by her pre-teen son, Reardon student Miguel Alves. The police questions Grace and her friends on the murder, and Elena's husband Fernando, initially an obvious suspect, has an alibi. Grace attempts to reach Jonathan at an oncology conference in Cleveland, but finds that he has left his smartphone in the nightstand by the bed. Unable to trace his whereabouts, Grace gets paranoid and has visions of the murder.

Media-covered rumors about Miguel's father having murdered his mother Elena are halted as NYPD detectives Joe Mendoza and Stuart Rosenfeld verify his alibi and start screening all school-related adults. Jonathan Fraser can't be found, not returning home, where he left his smartphone, nor at the medical conference he claimed attending. Doting son Henry calms panicking wife Grace by uttering every rational reason that may explain daddy being out of contact. Worse, Jonathan hasn't been at his hospital, where the police tells Grace his employment was ended months ago, becoming the police's prime suspect. Grace and Henry move in with her wealthy father Franklin Reinhardt, who is happy to take them in but warns against naively working with police without his lawyers' support.

Grace initially is bitterly against him, like her father, but Henry sticks by his, also at a tearful visit. Jonathan having admitted his affair with Elena, she starts to doubt his guilt and get grandpa to assign his cynical bulldog attorney Haley Fitzgerald to his case, who makes clear that means playing dirty without emotional boundaries.

Henry's words are twisted absurdly to allow the school board suspending him from Reardon, but Franklin reminds the principal how much he has donated to the school and can turn way worse on ingrates, given his resources and rich man lack of scruples.
