In 1925, Lady Caterham rents out the family estate, Chimneys, for a lavish party hosted by Sir Oswald Coote and his wife. Among the guests is Gerry Wade, a young Foreign Office employee with romantic feelings for Lady Eileen "Bundle" Brent. When Gerry's friends play a practical joke by placing eight alarm clocks in his bedroom, the situation takes a tragic turn. The following morning, Gerry is found dead from an apparent overdose of sleeping medication, with seven clocks mysteriously arranged on the mantelpiece and the eighth missing. Devastated and unconvinced that his death was accidental, Bundle begins investigating. An unfinished letter mentioning the mysterious "Seven Dials" raises further questions, prompting her to seek answers from Gerry's acquaintance Ronny Devereux. However, her investigation takes a dangerous turn when she discovers Ronny mortally wounded by a gunshot. Before dying, he mentions Jimmy Thesiger and Seven Dials, leaving Bundle convinced that both deaths are connected to a sinister conspiracy.

After confronting a mysterious man who has been following her, she discovers that he is Superintendent Battle of Scotland Yard, who warns her to abandon her investigation. Undeterred, Bundle visits the Seven Dials nightclub with Bill Eversleigh and secretly witnesses a meeting of masked figures plotting to obtain Dr. Matip's revolutionary formula for nearly indestructible metal. Learning that Matip will attend a government gathering at Wyvern Abbey, Bundle secures an invitation through George Lomax. At the gathering, Matip demonstrates his invention by allowing a pocket watch made from the strengthened metal to be shot without significant damage. Convinced that someone intends to steal the formula, Bundle recruits Jimmy Thesiger and Bill to help protect Matip. However, her attempts to investigate are interrupted by Superintendent Battle. Later that night, a violent disturbance and gunshots alarm the guests, who discover Jimmy unconscious and bleeding from a gunshot wound, leaving the fate of Matip's invention uncertain.

After examining the evidence, including a discarded pistol and a partially burned glove, Bundle begins questioning Jimmy's account. Loraine subsequently escapes with Matip's formula and bulletproof watch, leading Bundle, Jimmy, and Bill Eversleigh on a pursuit that continues aboard a train. There, Jimmy reveals his involvement in the theft and shoots Bill, who survives thanks to Matip's watch. Bundle realises that Jimmy deliberately wounded himself to distract everyone while Loraine stole the formula. The true mastermind is revealed to be Bundle's mother, Lady Caterham, who organised the conspiracy out of bitterness towards the British government and financial desperation following the deaths of her husband and son. Loraine is exposed as Gerry's killer, while Jimmy murdered Ronny Devereux. After confronting her mother, Bundle allows the authorities to intervene. Later, she discovers that Superintendent Battle leads the mysterious Seven Dials Society, a secret organisation dedicated to protecting international peace. Learning that her late father was one of its most trusted members, Bundle accepts Battle's invitation to join, bringing her investigation and the series to a close.
