The angsty Ames clan of Woodbridge, N.Y., drove the venerable serial cocreated by Gloria Monty ('General Hospital'). However, later years saw the family back-burnered in favor of flashier characters and plots, including a racy love story between an ingenue and a Catholic priest. But nothing compared with 64-year-old Joan Crawford's four-day fill-in for her ailing twentysomething daughter Christina Crawford, marking the oddest---and least believable---recast in the genre's history.
