Lucas Dalton, his brother Peter and their mate attempt a bank robbery, taking everyone hostage, despite noticing the presence of cop Nick Cavanaugh. When the police raids 52 hours, the bank guard is murdered. Egan Foote, who meant to commit suicide, becomes an accidental hero. Pete Dalton is killed, Dr. Jeremy Kates can save some of his fellow hostages. Nick furiously hits his boss for conceiving the shitty rescue plan, yet is offered a promotion without punishment if he 'keeps his opinion to himself'. Nine survivors, including Jeremy, Nick, his friend assistant D.A. Kathryn Hale, the banker and Egan, start a regularly meeting informal group. Felicia misses the first meeting, to see Pete in jail.

After the LA hold-up survivors group's inaugural meeting, Jeremy implores his lover not to throw two years down the drain. A ten hours hart transplant, with constant kidnapping flash-backs, fails to save his patient. Rather then pretending to appreciate his police colleagues actual bumbling in exchange for a promotion and medal, Nick resigns. Nasty insinuations start spreading about him and other survivors, till he budges. Lucas tells Franny, his only visitor in jail to forget, about him and forbids his lawyer to contact her. Egan enjoys another TV talk-show but is put back in his menial place at the office. Backtalking his bully-boss gets him fired.

Memories keep racing trough survivors' heads, even while Dr. Jeremy Kates works in hospital. He also feels guilty for saving fiend Ranadall's life, who was poisoned in hospital afterward. Nick, now promoted, pulls strings to keep informed. When he tells Lizzie, who just told Jeremy she's pregnant, is the prime suspect, Jeremy confesses. Lucas Dalton is questioned in jail whether he knew Felicia. Egan felt on top of the world, fired yet hoping it's the start of a brighter life, but challenging jobs prove hard to get and his wife refuse to considers kids.

Jeremy tells the Nine most patients can be talked over, which Nick opposes, but the majority wants to see him suffer for 'justice', so Lizzie goes convince Lucas to convince Randall. Nick also worries about Ricky and his dad Carlos. Egan's wife Mary leaves him, but he refuses to fight for a settlement, throws a 'bachelor party' and moves in with Nick.

Four weeks after bank hold-up, the LA court holds a hearing against the Dalton brothers alone, defended by Randall Reese, although the D.A. and assistant Tim Marley aren't sure if Eva Rios was their accomplice, given her link with con Carlos Vega, who refuses to tell Kathryn Hale anything, who finds evidence causing doubt with Nick rather suspects Franny. The killed bank guard Tom Mitchell's widow Judith sues the bank, but manager Jones sides with her, at a high price. Ultimately Eva is cleared.

Nick wins big from Egan, but insists he shouldn't move out until he finds a good apartment.

There he tells about their baby and how 'guilt' over his failed attempt to escape broke them up. While Egan makes a camping trip, Nick is approached by his ex, undercover cop Juliana 'Jules', who needs help as undercover cop, so he takes her in and asks Kate's fiancé Ed's cooperation.

The nine help prepare the prosecutor's case by going over the facts in detail leading after their failed attempt to drug Randall to his vicious refusal of urgent surgery to Tom and murderous shot in rage. Kathryn considers the mayor's offer to help her run for D.A., which fiancé Ed considers fatal for his long-planned campaign. Nick tells how he and she prevented a bloodbath by holding of an untimely SWAT incursion.

You're Being Watched

Jeremy reports pregnant Lizzie missing for three days, and she got an anonymous note "You're being watched". He realizes she completely broke with her past when moving to LA to study and told him nearly nothing. Thanks to Jeremy and Egan's observations, Nick discovers the Nine are being watched by people posing as cable employees etc. and suspects the FBI of planting bugs, while Malcolm thinks it's the bank, which fears damage claims, as already filed by the guard's widow. Ed tells Kathryn to accept running for D.A., as she has better prospects and it will always stand between them, while he transfers to private law practicing. Nick doesn't believe Lucas's denial there was a third robbery accomplices, possibly among the nine, and finds ex-con connections. Lizzie's bank card traces her to her ex-fiancé, a professor, in Arizona.

The Inside Man

Egan blurts out on a talk-show with FBI negotiator Gavin Dunne that the Nine are being watched. Nick's boss Pete Burton officially questions the Nine, including Nick, who is convinced Lucas must have a third, inside accomplice. It's Nick who finds out it was the security guard, Tom, who was killed by Randall, and where they stashed away $200,000 in cash. Jeremy feels like the meet in the sandwich while his ex Lizzie and present lover Frannie ultimately come to terms.

Malcolm is being honoured by the Brother and Sisters organization, an African-American reach out union for the disenfranchised. Lizzie dates a new guy, she sets Egan up with a date of his own. Kathryn is running for DA, but has her doubts about the three strikes law (hurray!) and whether or not to use the bank as a running point.
