American journalist William L. Shirer arrives in Nazi Germany with his Austrian-born wife Tess, and immediately witnesses events the National Socialists want hidden. He is frustrated by German Government controls on what news he can write.

The Shirers hide Jews, with Gestapo near. Bill is frustrated at the expulsion of British journalist Norman Ebbutt, one especially critical of Hitler's regime. Bill also meets Goering, who unwittingly offers visas for those Jews for cash.

Germany Calling. Austria, that is. Diplomat Luger rebukes Helga as to vicious Nazi propaganda advocating Anschluss with Germany. Shirer is offered a job by Ed Murrow for CBS. He and Tess transfer to Vienna, seeing Nazi-engineered violence.

Nazis plot a deception called Canned Goods, to convince the world Poland has attacked Germany, thus justifying Invasion. Germany Blitzkriegs France and Britain, and Shirer broadcasts French Surrender at Compiegne. He, Tess and Eileen flee.
