Adso's interest in Dolcino's writings alerts dogmatic monks Benno and Malachia. While the papal troops continue their unrelenting advance, a papal message clears the cardinal and inquisitor Bernardo Gui of sins in advance. Huntress Anna seizes the passage to exact bloody long-overdue revenge for her family's death on Bernardo Gui. (Al)chemical knowledge proves valuable in the bathtub drowning case after inspecting what's missing from the abbey's apothecary stock.

William and Adso cordially welcome the other Franciscan delegation members, who arrive on foot, and politely the Dominican opponents, but shiver learning the pope appointed dreaded Bernardus Gui his representative, wounded like the huntress. Adso is in time to free his peasant lover from a monk-set game trap, yet her grateful willingness to make love turns too scary by raped nightmare memory. The abbot pulls rank to restrict William's authority in conducting the murder investigation, which both fear Gui may take over. Having deciphered the code, William instructs Adso to help him annotate the maze of cells on a map of the abbey library to collect initials as further clues, in the process finding more evidence, such as William's stolen spectacles, and hidden books. Flashbacks to the 'revolutionary' Dolcino heresy period show several monks' traumas and ensuing loyalty or hatred.

After Adso confesses having had wood sex again, hence returns late, William generously gives the absolution for a one-off to become an understanding confessional father himself. Although the abbot treats the finally complete international delegations to a lavish welcome dinner, Franciscans nor Dominicans are in the mood to spare each-other Biblical claims that either evangelical poverty or a rich, powerful church is the only right way. Salvatore catches the peasant girl who nursed Anna's wounds before Adso's arrival, and warns his master against recognition by Bernardo Gui, who already remembers his face, not his past, and asks around.

The 'theological' debate about church property resumes after apologies from both parties, but is soon interrupted y inquisitor Bernardo Gui to investigate the murder of another monk. He immediately arrests, tortures and starts trialing Remigio da Varagine, who was found next to the corpse and is suspected of having switched form the Franciscans to the Benedictines to escape an earlier heresy trial. William and Adso search in vain the murder site for a Greek book Remigio whispers about, realizing a too late is was snatched away being bound with other manuscripts. Young monk Benno had opportunity for both crimes, no known motive. Adso arrives just in time to rescue his peasant beloved from the clutches of madly enamored Salvatore, who planned to magically make her fall for him as the simpleton's captive in the water mill, only to be trusted in the outflow, actually sparing him arrest by Gui's papal soldiers, who are shot at by vindictive Anna, desperate now her childhood savior is on inquisition trial.

Adso is late for the next trial phase, limping and William has to wash blood from his face and torso, warning against open support for the arrested 'witch' he loves. Inquisitor Gui has Salvatore tortured to extract confession of black magic for her love and testimony against his mentor Remigio da Varagine, who is forced to admit his part in the Dolcenite heresy and pillaging. William can only doubt the merits of torture-extracted declarations, to no avail, as his order is implicitly linked to the poverty-obsessed sect which turned rapacious. The search for the book, and Dolcino's letters hidden in it, is frustrated as Remigio's discredited, no longer loyal friend Berengario is replaced as librarian by Benno, Anna intrudes the abbey to free from the dungeon Remigio, who admits having betrayed her mother, and the 'witch', just too late. Adso approaches in vain the blind monk, by whom the abbot's blind greed is exposed, another murder follows conform his fifth Apocalyptic warning.
