Episode 1
The Line

Eli is pushing Alicia to run for State's Attorney and seemingly won't take no for an answer. He commissions a poll that shows she could win. Diane's proposed move from Lockhart Gardner Canning is proving to be a hot topic for Alicia and Cary. Diane proposes to bring 45 clients to Florrick Agos but wants Kalinda to come to the firm as well. More problematic is that she wants an equal vote with Alicia and Cary. At LGC Diane informs David Lee and Louis Canning that she's retiring. Everyone is thrown for a loop when Cary is arrested for abetting the transportation of nearly a kilo of heroin with the State's Attorney requesting bail of $1.3 million. Cary suspects it's related to the police trying to get to Lemond Bishop. For Bishop, it means someone in his crew is talking to the police. After the judge rules Alicia ineligible to represent Cary - also because of her link to Bishop - she turns to Diane to represent him. They're having trouble raising the bail money and when they do, the State's Attorney finds a new objection.

Cary is still feeling the wrath of the potential police state we all live in, which translates to "if the government wants to get you, they will", a variation of Cary's own words. Oh yes, it can happen to you. Some of Chicago's finest lawyers, Alicia and Diane, are working hard to keep him out of government hands, personified here by the long encroaching reach of the increasingly nasty D.A., Castro. In between numerous hearings and the occasional troubling assignation with investigator Kalinda, Cary and Alicia, represent a strangely wholesome GMO seed producer (John Boy) against a farmer whose fields are either being replanted or overrun by the modified strain, depending on your viewpoint. Subsequently they are forced to accept the decision of a religious arbitrator, where the case and arguments abound with righteous consideration and questions possibly far beyond the scope of the other elements of this episode. Amidst all this, constantly buffeted by events nudging her to a political calling, the insistently unwilling Alicia comes face to face with one of her own gods, or Ms. God in this case, and thus a decidedly non-GMO political seed is planted and then unwittingly nourished by her future opponent in a remarkably potent showdown.

Alicia is now considering running for State's Attorney and meets with Eli and a prospective campaign manager, Johnny Elfman. They go through the opposition research - essentially, all the dirt the opposition may have on Alicia. Having to drop Lemond Bishop as a client is a no brainer given the potential conflict with also defending Cary, but it's something she learns about Zack that sends her through the roof. Those aren't the only revelations: her brother Owen's boyfriend and her mother outrageous behavior are also at issue. The list of issues include some elements of Alicia's life though Eli holds back on any informer about the governor. Eli gets a revelation of his own. Alicia speaks to her mother and Owen but Lemond Bishop refuses to take his business elsewhere.

They agree to keep it friendly and avoid romantic situations.

Cary Agos has accepted the plea deal and the day has arrived to turn himself in. He's spending most of that day with a consultant who is meant to prepare him for what he can expect in prison. When Kalinda approaches Lemond Bishop to see if there's someone in prison who could watch his back she learns an important fact - the drugs in the case were in Chicago a few weeks before Cary supposedly advised Bishop's crew on how to import it and therefore the charge doesn't stand. Judge Cuesta refuses to withdraw Cary's plea agreement however unless Diane can prove the State's Attorney's office knew this beforehand. Alicia meanwhile is having trouble preparing for her debate with Prady but gets help from an unexpected source.

The Debate

Prady and Alicia go on a debate to discuss their policies. The debate is cut short because of a verdict resembling the Ferguson case. Meanwhile, Cary and Diane try to get a fair settlement in a divorce case between their client Neil Gross and his ex, who is represented by David Lee.

Louis Canning is suing the firm over what he claims is a false eviction from his offices. Alicia thinks they might be vulnerable. Also, her campaign manager tells of rumors making the rounds of a Lemond Bishop voice recording where he supposedly said something to the effect that he's already bought the next State's Attorney.

When she later gets a call from one of clients who spoke to Diane and was told Alicia wasn't returning to the firm, Alicia thinks the firm is trying to pull a fast one and steal her clients. Meanwhile, Cary decides to give evidence against Lemond Bishop unaware that Kalinda has already made a deal with ASA Geneva Pine. Kalinda's actions put her in great danger however.

Now unemployed and having a crisis of confidence, Alicia finds little of interest to fill her time until she comes in contact with Bret Tetro, a former client who she successfully defended against a charge of attempted murder 6 years ago. He's now facing a first degree murder charge in the same case after the man he supposedly tried to kill has now died. She tries to get Finn Polmar to take the case but he's overloaded so she plunges in. The judge has already ruled that double jeopardy doesn't apply and the ASA Matan Brody tells her she has a big hole in her case. She goes through the old file and recalls the investigation she, Cary and Kalinda undertook. The prosecution had evidence that a deceased witness from the first trial, Lexie, perjured herself and wants all the evidence from that trial thrown out.

After receiving a frantic call from Jacob Rickter, Alicia learns that he is being held incommunicado by the police, who deny having him in custody. Alicia and Finn Polmar manage to have him brought before a judge but the police have now charged him, insisting that he confessed to crimes before he was arrested. At the firm Diane, David Lee and the other partners are shocked to find that Louis Canning's wife Simone was hired by them as a paralegal. After Diane releases her from her employment, an outraged Louis Canning threatens to take them apart. Elsewhere, Lemond Bishop's sleazy lawyer Charles Lester is looking for Kalinda. Fearing that her friends may be in danger, Kalinda comes out of hiding.
