Episode 1
Prodigal Son

Accidentally killing a guard Marlott escapes from incarceration, determined to track down Hervey and, at Jemima's request, stop his experiments. Helped by kindly Father Ambrose and seamstress Esther Rose he changes his identity but sinister aristocrat Frederick Dipple seems unusually anxious for his arrest. Nightingale, now a sergeant, finds his investigation into the murder off an archdeacon hampered by the pompous dean of Westminster.

Episode 2
Not John Marlott
Nightingale encounters more hostility from the church as he investigates the apparently ritual murder of Father Ambrose but finds as link to Marlott. Marlott himself, having learnt that Jemima is dead, assumes the name Jack Martins and works with ex-priest Spence to bury corpses of victims of the plague that is sweeping the capital. He takes lodgings with Esther Rose, who has been given a commission by Dipple and, helped by Spence, decides to investigate the archdeacon's corpse, hoping to connect it to Hervey.

Episode 3
Seeing the Dead
As the plague claims more victims Billy Oates reappears as part of Mrs Wild's acting troupe. Another vicar is found dead, like the others with his heart cut out, and Spence tells Marlott all three victims opposed the dean's greedy land deals. Peel, however, demands that the dean allow a cemetery for the plague victims to be built on church land. Meanwhile Marlott traces the source of the plague, believing Hervey to be involved, and Esther learns that Dipple has employed her to make a dress for his newly-created automaton.

Episode 4
Little Boy Lost
An unexpected encounter with the mysterious Frederick Dipple suggests that Marlott needs to protect his allies, who he realizes are increasingly in danger.

Episode 5
The Marriage of Heaven and Hell
Marlott's new intelligence brings him closer to a solution and leads him to an apparently deserted tower. However, there are darker and colder dangers inside.

Episode 6
Bride of Frankenstein
As the police close in Marlott needs to rescue Esther from Hervey and Dipple, and resurrect both his own and her fortunes.
