In the year 1977, Major league Baseball has officially inaugurated the free agent market. A baseball player named Reggie Jackson came to New York to sign a contract with the ball club called the "Yankees". But, what Jackson does not know that he will soon bring controversy to the club, by saying that he's the "Straw that stirs the drink", causing his fellow teammates especially, Thurman Munson to not like him. Plus, manager Billy Martin and owner George M. Steinbrenner III also have their own private arguments about Jackson and the team. Meanwhile, other things are happening in New York as a killer using a .44 magnum and calling himself as "The Son Of Sam" is lurking around the city, and the infamous blackout.

The Straw

The year is 1977. The New York Yankees are coming off their loss to the Cincinatti Reds in the 1976 world series. The Yankees' manager Billy Martin and the owner, George Steinbrenner are discussing on who should be on the team for next season. During the inaugural season of the free agent market, Steinbrenner was talking to Oakland Athletics star, Reggie Jackson about joining the Yankees. He accepted. Then, spring training began. Billy Martin at one time did not want to ride the bus with the rest of the team, which escalated into an argument between him and Steinbrenner.

Team in Turmoil

The regular 1977 season has begun, and the Yankees are getting off to a rough start, losing 7 games in a row at one point. In the middle of it all, a Yankee player named Thurman Munson read an article supposedly about Reggie Jackson stating that he was "The straw that stirs the Drink". Upset and confused, Jackson is trying to set things straight about it. Meanwhile, in the city of New York itself was facing a crisis of it's own. A serial killer using a .45 caliber gun is shooting and killing people while the police try to find out about the killer, Billy Martin and Steinbrenner are arguing over Jackson's position in the batting order.

Time for a Change?

In the city of New York, the cops have found some evidence about the killer. He calls himself "The son of Sam" and he specializes in killing women. As a result, the women in New York were either putting their hair up or cutting it so they will not be The son of Sam's latest victim. Meanwhile, in Boston, Reggie Jackson could not catch a blooper in right field, and Billy Martin intentionally took Jackson out of the game, which lead to a huge argument. Jackson was not happy about it, and he was told to leave the park before it escalated into something bigger. When Steinbrenner witnessed this, he ordered his advisor, Gabe Paul to fire Billy Martin. This reached the rest of the team and threatened Steinbrenner to not fire Martin, then Steinbrenner straightened things out between Martin and Jackson himself.

The 1 year anniversary of the first Son of Sam murder nears. New York city riots as the city goes dark. Munson goes public about Steinbrenner's micromanaging and continual interference with Martin's managing.

The regular season is almost over, and the Yankees are 3 games out of first place. The team knows that they must get their act together in order to win. This is when Billy Martin, Reggie Jackson, and Thurman Munson put aside their differences and win games. The Yankees then got hot and started to win games, and Jackson was batting fourth in the lineup, what Steinbrenner wanted Jackson to bat the entire season. As the Yankees were heading up to first place, the cops in New York are inching closer to The son of Sam. They eventually found him and arrested him, going by the name of David Burkowitz, who was a postal worker.

The Game's Not as Easy as It Looks, Fellas

The Yankees have done it. They have stormed past the Boston Red Sox and the rest of the American league to take the AL east division championship title. Now, they must face the Kansas City Royals in the American league championship series. The series at first seemed like a roller coater ride, as the Royals and the Yankees won one game apiece at Yankee Stadium, but the Royals won one game in the first at Kaufmann Stadium. The Yankees are endangered of being eliminated. Then, came game 4 which the Yankees won. Before game 5, Jackson was told that he was not playing because of his statistics in the series. Jackson did whatever he can to keep the team in the series. Then, Billy Martin brought up Sparky Lyle in the 4th inning, which gave the Yankees an extra edge. Jackson came to pinch hit, which he got a hit and some runs to win the ALCS.

New York, winning the Pennant, face the LA Dodgers in the 1977 World Series. Even so, problems, feuds and whining to the Press does not stop. The Yanks face LA in two home games , then travel West to see how History will play out.

The contest is on for 1977's World Series. The Yankees return from LA 3-2 up, needing one more victory to clinch Baseball's prize crown. Is this where they finally gel, and when No. 44 Reggie Jackson at last gets his act together ?
