The sumptuous Renaissance-era soap opera-costume drama that is a blend of Corleones and Sopranos family-and-palace intrigue along the Appian Way and other European locales launches a second season. When a cache of long-lost Italian artifacts is discovered, Pope Alexander VI (Jeremy Irons) is inspired to throw a pagan-theme feast for the people of Rome. Meanwhile, Alexander's mistress discovers he's taken another lover; and Cardinal Della Rovere (Colm Feore) settles into the simple life of a parish priest but becomes unsettled when Cesare (François Arnaud) attempts to assassinate him. On the war front, Micheletto (Sean Harris) helps Cesare recruit mercenaries to exact revenge on French troops who burned a nunnery; and Juan (David Oakes) leads a triumphant campaign in Spain. While at home, Lucrezia (Holliday Grainger) loses a lover and is courted by a new royal swain.
