Mitch Miller, the goateed head of Columbia Records, waved a baton and led sing-along performances of old standards that bucked rock-and-roll trends sweeping the nation in the 1960s. A kind of corny forerunner to karaoke, it featured a bouncing ball that guided viewers over scrolling lyrics so they could join in on such toe-tappers as 'You Are My Sunshine,' 'Ain't We Got Fun,' 'Be Kind to Your Web-Footed Friends' and 'The Yellow Rose of Texas' (a No. 1 hit for Miller in 1955).
