Historian Simon Schama recounts the story of former slaves who, after fighting for the British in the Revolutionary War in exchange for freedom, were first transported to Nova Scotia and, when that proved to be too inhospitable a climate, Sierra Leone, the latter journey on a flotilla of 15 ships led by British naval lieutenant John Clarkson. The documentary makes use of autobiographical accounts, diaries, journals and reenactments.
