Within her bed sitting room at 35, Mafeking Terrace, Monica Webster battles with her inner self - until she receives a welcome visitor.

An old London house, 35 Mafeking Terrace, has been converted into bed-sits. This lodging house hosts a variety of people including student Jan who is working in a restaurant during the holidays and her secretive fellow tenant Tony.

Episode 7
Irascible and eccentric elderly tenant Mr Busby is accused by fellow tenant Miss Peebles of taking her doorstep delivery gold top milk and sabotaging the next days delivery, but Mr Busby denies it and can't see what the fuss is about. After answering the telephone the landlady finds out that Miss Peebles is actually Mrs Wilby, who arranges a date with a mysterious friend.
Episode 8
Miss Peebles' dinner date in her room's balcony with Malcolm seems to be going fine until they are interrupted by Mr Busby, who begins to regale Malcolm with his knowledge of old musicals. Miss Peebles manages to sit through it with gritted teeth until Mr Busby returns to his room and then really ruins her night with a series of accidents from his window up above. It's the last straw for her and she wants him evicted.
Episode 9
A new tenant, war widow Mrs Fox, becomes acquainted with lodger Ted, who has just lost his job as a vacuum salesman. To add to his troubles his boss tells him he is to be questioned by the police regarding an alleged assault on a young boy. Shortly after Ted and Mrs Fox get acquainted, the police turn up and start to question him about his involvement with the apparent assault, but with Ted admitting to be a bit slow, he doesn't seem to understand the seriousness of the complaint against him.
Episode 10
The past comes to haunt the new friends. For Mrs Fox, it is a snobbish former friend who is openly disdainful about the flat. For Ted, it is another visit from a bullying policeman who has uncovered his recent past.
Episode 11
Free-spirited and uninhibited Jo can't help causing trouble by taunting her boyfriend Gerry, her disabled elderly neighbour Frank and her timid but unflappable flatmate Anne. Jo is an aspiring model and actress who doesn't seem to be taking life seriously, whereas Anne is level-headed, considerate and caring.
Episode 12
Jo has a change of heart and after insulting disabled Frank the previous night she now wants to help him. She does his shopping and collects his social security, but when she tries to cook for him he insults her and treats her badly. After a shaky start Jo and Frank begin to appreciate each other's company, and after a heart to heart with flatmate Anne followed by good news on the job front suddenly her whole attitude to life is much brighter.

A single mother and the feckless attitude of her husband add to boarding house landlady Dorothy's problems.
Episode 14
The other tenants rally to help a lone parent, and landlady Dorothy finds solutions to her own problems.
Episode 15
Sarah and Lynn form a friendly bond and occasionally encounter a reclusive and evasive tenant. Sarah decides to host an intimate New Year's Eve dinner party for her divorced friend Lynn and the mysteriously evasive Robert in the hope she can play matchmaker but events begin to turn sour and the evening doesn't quite turn out the way she'd hoped it would, eventually leaving Sarah on her own at the stroke of midnight on the new year.

Newly separated from her husband, Angela moves into the boarding-house and keeps crossing paths with gregarious Lionel, who moved in on the same day.
Episode 17
Lionel's self-confidence helps Angela regain hers, but he may be hiding truths about himself.

Can the romance survive between Gertrud and Tim, two newlyweds, when confined to one small room?

London can be very hard, especially to dreamers like Gertrud and Tim.

A barmaid from Northern Ireland takes the attic room and begins a relationship with a Barbadian. Meanwhile, Clive needs money for new scheme.

Bernard moves in with Ginnie, but this causes tensions in their relationship made worse when Dorothy wants to raise their rent.
Episode 22
Mr Cosgrove is intrigued by the strange sounds coming from new tenant Miss Hicks' room. They share the same dividing wall and he seems to think that she is entertaining someone, although by all accounts she is on her own. He tries to befriend her and initially she rebuffs his overtures, but eventually begins to warm to him.
Episode 23
Mr Cosgrove and Miss Hicks start to share evenings together in her room - dinner, some drinks, wine and conversation. They reveal things about themselves which appear to mirror their own life experiences; Cosgrove nursed his wife during a terminal illness and Miss Hicks cared for her ailing mother until her death. As the evening progresses Miss Hicks dims down the lighting and turns the evening into something more intimate.
Episode 24
New tenant Peter is a bit of a ladies man and is fond of a drink. He also has the gift of the gab and is not averse to laying on the charm to any woman prepared to listen to him. However he wants his landlady to keep his address a secret from a demanding former lover, but it doesn't take her too long to track him down. Is he telling the truth about his past and why is he being hunted by her?
Episode 25
After constantly telephoning the house, much to the annoyance of the other tenants, Peter's mystery lover Emma finally turns up to ask him to come back home, but he would rather stay where he is for the peace and quiet. Emma, however, will not take no for an answer and loses her temper to the point where landlady Dorothy Lawson has to throw her out. Following another night of constant telephone calls the Lawsons consider asking him to leave but, to their relief, he finally decides to return home to Emma.
Episode 26
Reg Kitson is a retired army war veteran who has trouble understanding the behaviour and the morals of the younger generation, especially the disrespectful young man next door whose hedonistic lifestyle he finds unbearable. His life is falling apart and his drinking is spiralling out of control. He is living the life of a derelict until a fellow tenant and nurse Helen takes control and helps him get his life back together.
Episode 27
Helen is eager for Ted to get a job and helps him look through the classifieds in the local newspaper. Ted continues to have problems with his obnoxious and selfish young neighbour Pete and is becoming increasingly hostile towards him, especially after a tasteless funeral prank. When Pete hosts a particularly loud party, Reg is driven to despair by the noise and decides to give him a piece of his mind.
Episode 28
Susan, a 17-year-old secretarial student returns home to her bedsit at 35 Mafeking Terrace. After an uncomfortable conversation with landlord, Mr Lawson, she is visited by her agitated mother who questions her choices.
Episode 29
Susan returns to her room and begins to prepare a meal when she is interrupted by an uninvited visitor - her father. She lies to him and he reacts angrily. Landlady Mrs Lawson interrupts as he forces himself on his daughter.
Episode 30
Returning late, charming, self-confessed 'pseudo-liberal intellectual' divorced Ron drunkenly wakes up Dorothy. The following morning, she questions her relationship with Clive, and a hungover Ron is reminded of an important appointment.
Episode 31
Dorothy confides to Ron that Clive's inability to commit to their relationship is getting on top of her. Ron thinks he might be able to help and invites Clive in for a drink.

Australian writer Peter tries to settle in to life in London by making friends with two women who also live in the building, but is annoyed that his friend Alan is less sociable.
Episode 33
Peter sells a radio script and finds he has much in common with fellow tenant, Bea. However, Alan is still unable to share his friend's happiness, and the reason becomes apparent.
Episode 34
Well-spoken Alison brings a rare touch of glamour and intellect to Mafeking Terrace, and Clive finds he has much in common with her. But Dorothy is concerned that he may be getting too attentive.
Episode 35
Alison becomes ill with 'flu and finds Clive a willing nurse, causing Dorothy to let slip their address to Alison's estranged husband.
Episode 36
Solitary Paul prefers to keep relationships at a distance, including his girlfriend Lynda, a student in Glasgow. But his gregarious neighbour Wendy insists on getting to know him better.

Lynda arrives from Glasgow and Paul must confront the reasons behind his shyness.

Timid Anthea is encouraged to let her hair down by her outgoing neighbor Fran and her boyfriend Trevor.

Clive lets a room to Denny without checking with Dorothy, and the new lodger's attitude arouses her suspicions.

Sheila tries to keep her teenage sister Beverley under control in her first time in London, but their mutual interest in scholarly neighbour Ben only increases tension.

Sheila has packed a suitcase and tells landlord Clive that she is off home for a long weekend, but sister Beverley has no idea why she left so suddenly without telling her or Ben. Later, Beverley receives a letter from Sheila telling her where she is and what her plans are, but there are surprises in store for both Beverley and Ben.

By chance Frances meets married ex lover Richard and is keen to resume the affair. But is everything as it seems.

Frances has to deal with some distressing revelations and comes to a decision on her future.

New tenant Arthur takes up temporary residence until his neighbour Rowena moves out and he then moves into her bigger room. He takes the opportunity of getting to know more about her by asking to have a look round her place. Although Rowena is a bit of an enigma it doesn't stop Arthur from becoming attracted to her, but she has no interest in him.

Arthur is hoping that there might be a future for him with Rowena, but she already has her future worked out, and it doesn't include Arthur. He is surprised to see her canoodling with a mystery man in a car outside the house and when he asks what her connection to the man is he finds out that Rowena is not the person he thought she was.

Struggling fruit and veg businessman Henry asks his neighbour Jean to help deal with his correspondence, but Jean suspects there may be another reason why Henry is constantly making excuses for his poor eyesight.
Episode 51
Henry finally admits to Jean that he never learned to read. When Jean starts to teach him how to read they begin to open up their inner feelings to each other. Jean gives Henry some advice on how to repair his broken marriage.
Episode 52
Wife Kate is furious because husband David hasn't come home in time for dinner. He eventually turns up drunk, accompanied by an equally drunk Mike, a former RAF buddy.
Episode 53
Mike makes an unwelcome return just as Kate is preparing a cosy dinner for two. She is furious and wants him out, but David is more conciliatory and wants him to stay. Why is Mike back and what is he after?
Episode 54
Harry is a retired music hall star who shares a room with his wife Pearl. His peaceful retirement is interrupted by a radio producer who is interested in documenting Harry's entertainment career for a radio show. Meanwhile Dorothy is annoyed that Clive is using rent money for some mysterious business arrangement.
Episode 55
Clive explains to Dorothy how he made a profit of over £600 at an auction house. An argument ensues and as a result it seems that their relationship is in danger of falling apart. Whilst recording his memories of his bygone career with the radio producer, Harry reminisces about his former music hall comedy partnership of 'Leslie and Lane'.
