Supernatural creator Eric Kripke engineered this inventive series, which is set in a dystopian future. In the premiere, it's revealed that electricity simply stopped working 15 years earlier, felling airplanes, automobiles, cell phones, computers—and the United States, which fractured into regional factions after the calamity. It's pretty much the only world 20-year-old Charlie Matheson (Tracy Spiridakos) and her asthmatic younger brother, Danny (Graham Rogers), have known, and the life they lead with their father, Ben (Tim Guinee), in an agrarian community outside of Chicago is, all things considered, close to ideal. But that changes when the Monroe Republic's Capt. Tom Neville (Giancarlo Esposito) arrives to arrest Ben, who is believed to possess information about why the blackout occurred. In short order, Ben is fatally wounded, Danny is taken in his stead and Charlie is off to the city find her Uncle Miles (Billy Burke), who her dying dad told her would be able to rescue Danny. Accompanying her: former tech tycoon-turned-teacher Aaron (Zak Orth), who carries a mysterious pendant Ben gave him just as Neville and his men arrived; Ben's girlfriend Maggie (Anna Lise Phillips); and Nate (J.D. Pardo), a charismatic young man she meets along the way who may not be on the up-and-up. Once they find Miles, he reluctantly agrees to help despite his misgivings; and, as the season evolves, the motley crew is joined by Miles' old pal Nora (Daniella Alonso), forms alliances with anti-Monroe Republic rebels and faces tragedies. The mission, too, evolves: What begins as a rescue effort develops into an all-out effort to upend the Monroe Republic; kill its leader, Bass Monroe (David Lyons)—who is another old buddy of Miles'; and restore power.
