An Oscar-nominated 2003 profile of Kurt Gerron, a German-Jewish actor, director and cabaret performer, who ended his career by directing a Nazi propaganda film extolling life in the "model" concentration camp where he himself was a prisoner. The film hauntingly traces how he wound up making "a deal with the Devil," as narrator Ian Holm puts it. Some deal. Soon after its completion, he died in Auschwitz.
