As directed by Roger Appleton, the documentary Passport to Liverpool offers a comprehensive sociological cross-section of one of England's best-known cities. Appleton uses screen time to explore the myriad of ways in which Liverpool diverges from other British communities of like size and history, and argues in no uncertain terms that various social groups have dramatically shaped the city's unique character, from Irishmen to dockworkers to migrants. The director then explores the many contours of the city's history, with both traditional and heretofore untold stories of Liverpool's origins woven into a giant tapestry; he also talks at length with current Liverpudlians about the character of their city and the personal meaning of Liverpool to them.
