Episode 1

A flashback to Ardsmuir Prison shows the conflict in leadership between Jamie and Tom Christie. Tom is protestant and detests Catholics like Jamie. He has struck a bargain with the prison governor for leniency in return for prisoner cooperation. Jamie upsets that all; the men prefer to follow him. Back at Fraser's Ridge in North Carolina, Claire is trying to recover from her brutal rape at the hands of Lionel Brown. She is thrilled to have managed to synthesize ether as an anesthetic for performing surgeries. Through Major MacDonald, the governor has asked Jamie to accept a position as Indian Agent for the Crown. He politely declines. The major indicates he will now offer it to Richard Brown. Tom Christie shows up with his son Allen and his daughter Malva seeking a place to live. They have run out of other options. Jamie is gone at the moment, and Roger extends a welcome. On his return, this gives Jamie pause because the old friction between Tom and him is still palpable. Marsali is pregnant with her fourth child and Fergus has begun abusing both alcohol and his wife. Claire notices some bruises. Tom begins to build a protestant church community and agrees to build both a church and a school building. While cutting wood, he lacerates his hand which Claire has to suture back together. Richard Brown and his gang ride up claiming that Allen Christie has stolen a powder horn. They find it on him and he cannot deny taking it. When Richard tries to arrest him, Jamie says they will carry out their own discipline. In front of everyone, he administers 10 lashes with his belt on Allen. As he struts away, he tells Major MacDonald that he will accept the Indian agent position. Richard Brown is too despicable to hold that office.

Episode 2

As the official Indian agent, Jamie and Ian visits a Cherokee village. They are interested in guns, not the knives they have brought. They insist that their fight is with the settlers who cross the Treaty Line. They appreciate Jamie's honesty when he can't promise them guns. That night, two young Indian women are sent to pleasure him. He is flabbergasted, then politely turns them down. Tom Christie has Claire remove the sutures from his hand. She says when it is healed, she can fix his right hand. He declines saying it's God's will. His daughter Malva is very interested in Claire's healing techniques. She invites her to accompany her to examine Marsali's pregnancy. As Claire takes Marsali's pulse, she sees more bruises. Marsali admits Fergus is drinking heavily from guilt about not being able to prevent the Lionel Brown rape incident. The church/school is going up fast. Roger holds a funeral for Granny Wilson. During the ceremony, she suddenly wakens. She has a slow, but fatal, aneurysm that hasn't quite finished her off. Claire's hand in reviving her cause some of the settlers to think she is a witch. Marsali starts having birth pains. Roger hunts down a drunk Fergus and forces him to go to the aid of his wife. A baby boy is delivered with dwarfism. Fergus is hugely upset by this. The Cherokee show up asking about guns. Jamie says there won't be any. They leave with much grumbling. Jamie is afraid that Tom will use the church as a way to promote his political agenda. He tells Tom in no uncertain terms that it will be a meeting house for everyone, including Claire and other papists. Tom returns home and vents his frustrations on Malva for spending so much time with Claire. He tries to whip her, but his hands won't allow him to. He storms over to Claire's telling her he is ready to have his right hand fixed. Fergus and Marsali's son is given the name Henri-Christian.

Episode 3

A group of boys have place Henri-Christian in a basket to see if he is the Devil's seed. Roger dives into the river and saves the baby just before a sizable waterfall. He baptizes Henri-Christian on the spot to illustrate to the boys he is one of God's children. Later, Jamie has the boys assemble in his office. He gives them a choice of touching the baby or a hot poker. They agree the baby will not harm them if touched. Fergus has his own troubles about being father to a dwarf. He explains to Jamie what would be done with him in France. He continues to drink heavily which bothers Marsali. Tom Christie is ready to have his hand operation. He refuses to be subjected to ether and foregoes a stick to bite. He says he will use the power of prayer to get him through it. The pain of the procedure is about more than he can take. Malva watches from outside the room. The surgery is a success. Claire opts to keep him overnight for observations. Ian and Malva talk about her background. She tells him that her mother was hung as a witch. When Fergus is drunk yet again, Marsali throws him out. "I'll have a whole husband or none at all!" Jamie follows him into the woods and watches as he cuts his wrist. He rushes up to Fergus and gives him a pep talk, tells him how valuable he is to the community. Fergus responds. He enters the house an tells Marsali, "Never again." She tells him that she can watch out for the family too. She admits to having killed Lionel Brown by injecting hemlock in his neck. After talking about how Jamie's stories of novels helped the men in Ardsmuir prison, Claire lends Tom a copy of Tom Jones. He returns it later with a note about it being filth. Roger preaches about a baby in a basket - Moses. Major MacDonald arrives with guns for the Cherokees. He shows Jamie and Claire a newspaper clipping about the Boston Tea Party. "It's beginning."

Episode 4

In a flashback scene, Ian is initiated in the Mohawk tribe with which he lives. The chief declares he has no more white blood and is given the name Wolf's Brother. Back in the present, Jamie and Ian prepare to transport the load of rifles, brought by Major MacDonald to Frazer's Ridge, to the Cherokee. Before they leave, Bree pulls Jamie into the house and lets him know about the demise of the Cherokee in sixty years that will result in the Trail of Tears. When Jamie and Ian arrive at the camp, Ian is shocked to see some Mohawk warriors from his former tribe, especially Kaheroton. Jamie senses his upset and asks what the problem is. Ian launches into a description of his life with the Mohawks. Early on, his attempts to speak their language amuse one of the young Indian women. He calls her Emily because he cannot pronounce her name. An attraction grows between them to the point that she offers him a totem of her clan, a stone carved in the shape of a wolf head. This is her proposal for marriage. Eventually, she is pregnant with their child but loses it in a miscarriage. This happens a second time. She asks him to leave, to return to his people. His spirit is too weak. He shows up in protest to find Emily with Kaheroton. In the present, Ian asks another Mohawk tribe member if Emily succeeded in having a child with Kaheroton. When told the pair have a son, he boils over and starts a fight with Kaheroton. Jamie breaks it up. In the process, another Indian agent known as Scotchee, challenges Kaheroton to a duel. He is afraid that the Mohawks will talk the Cherokee out of selling land to him. He selects pistols for the duel's weaponry. Ian gives Kaheroton Jamie's pistol to use. Scotchee cheats by turning before the signal is given. Ian throws Kaheroton's club, dislodging the gun. Scotchee is ridiculed as a coward. Jamie has pangs of guilt knowing the outcome of the ward and the Trail of Tears. Her tells the chief of this, warning him to fight for his people first. His people should hide when the time for exile is at hand. Back at the ridge, Claire uses Lizzy and Josiah as guinea pigs for her ether research. Malva Christie assists. Neither of the two can believe they were asleep. Upon Jamie's return, Claire meets him in the stable for a tryst. Malva watches from outside.

Episode 5

In a flashback scene to June 1746, Flora MacDonald helps Bonnie Prince Charles escape from Scotland to the Isle of Skye. In the present, Jamie has submitted his resignation as Indian Agent. Lord John is assuring Governor Martin that this is not a reflection on Jamie's loyalty. In Wilmington, Jamie meets with Cornelius Harnett, one of the Sons of Liberty leaders, in the hotel lobby, agreeing to come to their meeting that evening. Later, Jamie and Claire attend a rousing loyalist rally to hear an address by Flora MacDonald, recounting her saving of Prince Charles but how she now is behind the king. Lord John is glad to see Jamie there because he has seen Jamie's name on lists of rebels that are in circulation. Aunt Jocasta and Innes also show up. While they are there, some trouble breaks out in town. A bunch of rebel colonists are ready to tar and feather a Mr. Simms who has been printing loyalist pamphlets. Jamie defends him reminding the crowd that the pamphlets are simply a job, not an expression of Simms's backing of the loyalists. Back at the party, he calls his aunt out, realizing that she has bankrolled the whole event. Jamie starts feeling guilty about deceiving Lord John; he tells him point blank that he will be attending the Sons of Liberty meeting. Lord John says troops will move in to arrest everyone. Jamie goes to the meeting and warns attendees just in time. Back at Fraser's Ridge, Roger gets himself in deep with widow Amy McCallum. He is spending so much time in helping fix her cabin, that people are wondering if there isn't some romancing going on between them. Even Bree accuses him of this. When he and Tom Christie are bringing a bell for the church/meeting house, they catch Malva and the Henderson boy in a compromising situation. Malva, realizing that she is in deep trouble if her father learns of this, threatens to claim she saw Amy and Roger kissing. Roger immediately finds someone else to help Widow McCallum. Bree is pleased and takes the opportunity to disclose that she is pregnant. Marsali perceives this, too. While Bree and the girls were looking for a waterwheel site, they find a Venom of the North Wind charm, a love potion. It's Malva's doings. Claire hears someone whistle a 1960's tune. They also stole an emerald from Jocasta.

Episode 6

SPOILER: The MacNeills are missing from church, so Claire organizes a group of women to check on them. When they arrive at their cabin, there is a terrible stench and everyone in the family is deathly ill. They have gotten into bad water a contracted the "bloody flux", amoebic dysentery. Mrs. MacNeill and the baby die. More cases are soon reported in the area which keep Claire busy to the point of dropping. She finally collapses and has to be carried to her bed. Malva, who is very dedicated to her, will not leave her side. After a week of fevered dreams, Claire regains consciousness and is lucid. Bree happily reports that she is pregnant. Jamie eventually finds a dead elk in the river that supplies water to the disease-ridden families. Tom Christie is showing symptoms of illness, so Claire asks him for a stool sample to investigate. He is disgusted with her request. Shortly after that, Tom arrives with Malva in tow. She, too, is pregnant but refuses to identify the father. She is subsequently pressed to identify the guilty party as Jamie. She insists that Jamie coupled with her dozens of times while I was tending Claire. Claire is so upset at this, having had a fevered recollection of seeing Malva put a hand on Jamie's shoulder, that she needs some air. Jamie finds her in the barn. He tells her that there is something he needs to confess. He dredges up the time he was hiding in the cave in Scotland to prevent being captured by the Redcoats. Mary McNabb came and gave him comfort one time when she was in need of it, too. But he had nothing to do with Malva. Most of the Ridge folk hear of Malva's shocking revelation and are quick to believe it. Claire faces Malva and tells he she believes in Jamie's assertion that he has not lain with her. Malva's brother Allan spreads rumors that Claire is a witch. Ian reveals to Claire that the baby could be his. With Jamie away at the local congress talks, some of the Ridge residents talk about a rebellion. Jamie returns and says he was not selected for the Philadelphia Convention because of his reported indiscretions. Claire resorts to a dose of ether to quell her racing thoughts. When she has awakened, she finds Malva has been murdered in the garden. She tries vainly to save Malva's baby by C-section.

Episode 7

As Malva's death is contemplated, her testimony about Jamie having stolen her innocence comes to people's minds. Tom and Allan Christie view her corpse in the garden, the incision for Claire's attempt to save the baby only too evident. Claire says she will prepare the body for burial. Her father claims she should be buried in the woods, not among the godly souls in church ground. Jamie tells Tom he is wrong. While suturing up Malva's wounds, Claire is haunted by Lionel Brown's ghost. She drinks and is tempted to use ether to calm her nerves. Ridge residents appear at the Big House to ask questions about what they have been hearing, that Jamie is indeed the father of Malva's baby and Claire murdered her in a fit of jealous rage. Jamie firmly denies such accusations. Just when things could not get worse, Ian reveals that Lizzy is pregnant by one of the Beardsley twins. Claire visits with Lizzie about her sexual activity with both boys. Thus, she knows not which is the father. At Malva's funeral, Tom refuses to let Jamie join as a pall bearer. When Claire picks up the baby's casket, Allan rushes up and grabs it away from her, spewing vengeful rebukes that she of all people should carry it. Jamie questions Lizzy about her baby. Lizzy declares she loves them both, that they are one spirit in two bodies. After realizing the guilty boy cannot be identified, he declares that she must marry one of them immediately to stem more adverse gossip. He forces her to take him to the Beardsley's hideout in the stable. He has the boys draw straws to see which must marry Liz. Keziah draws the winning straw. Jamie hand-fasts them until they can be properly married. Roger contemplates his future. He tells Bree that he believes he should be a minister, that he will seek ordination with the church officials in Edenton. In the middle of the night, before Roger and family will depart, Lizzie wakes him to insist that he marry her and Josiah. He pulls on his breeches and performs the ceremony. They next morning, as Roger is readying the wagon for their trip, he mentions the ceremony he performed for Lizzie. They are chagrined to learn they have been manipulated. Richard Brown and his Committee on Safety arrive to arrest Claire for Malva's murder.

Episode 8

Richard Brown and his Committee of Safety arrive to arrest Claire for murder. However, due to the rising political tensions in the colonies, Brown's plan to find a judge for a trial does not go as expected.
