Season 2 of the comedy series tackles issues that are at the forefront of present-day America. Alex (Marcel Ruiz) is taunted at school with "build the wall"; Lydia (Rita Moreno) has to take her citizenship test, which she finds very difficult and might result in her being deported; Penelope (Justina Machado) recalls how 9/11 changed her life and forced her to make decisions that ultimately caused her struggles with mental illness. However, not everything is dark and gloomy: This season also deals with Elena's (Isabella Gomez) love life, Dwayne's (Todd Grinnell) unwavering support of the family, and a new boyfriend for Penelope.
