Winston calls Diane and her sons back from their vacation, informing them that UBRI has won the contract to construct ORCA City. Because UBRI's plans threaten a nearby fish breading ground, Dianne (ORCA's new Environmental officer) quickly calls a stop to the construction and begins an environmental study of the site. While on a dive with Jason to examine the breeding grounds, they divert to ORCA City construction site where an accident sees Jason become trapped under a fallen strut. As a rescue party is assembled, Charlie finds Jason and calls out to Neri who arrives to save Jason just as his air is about to run out. Dianne takes her case against UBRI before an ORCA tribunal who rule in her favour, forcing UBRI to relocate their construction. Dr. Hellegren's contingency plan of destroying the breeding grounds is thwarted by Neri who removes the explosives. Suspecting Jason and Brett's interference, Dr Hellegren warns them not to interfere with him again.

Brett talks Jason and Neri into searching for a way into the spacecraft they found buried on Neri's island but their search is unsuccessful. Brett and Benny meet Cassandra, a new arrival from ORCA's sister station near Florida. Against Brett's advice, Cass takes out a sailboat, but with a storm coming and a damaged sail, she seeks shelter on Neri's island. The following day, Neri locates an entrance to the buried spaceship that has been uncovered by the storm. Fetching Brett and Jason from ORCA, the three return to the island where Cass has started exploring. When the boys arrive on the island, Cass sees them with Neri then quickly fixes the sail on her boat and heads back to ORCA. Discovering signs of Cass's stay on the island, the three pursue Cass to learn what she has seen. Distracted by the sight of Neri surfacing in the water ahead of her boat, Cass is struck by her boat's boom and is knocked unconscious. Back on ORCA, Jason and Brett anxiously await word on Cass and are pleased to learn she has amnesia and cannot remember anything of what happened to her. Jason tells Brett it will be up to him to stay close to Cass to make sure she doesn't reveal anything about Neri should she regain her memory. Meanwhile, Dr. Hellegren visits his daughter at her boarding school where she pleads with him to be allowed to spend her vacation at home with him.

Jason and Brett steal a pump from UBRI supplies on ORCA so they can pump the water out the spaceship buried on Neri's island. Jason is teamed up with Sallyanne for a training exercise, but their first drill does not go well. Cass and Brett trade practical jokes but when they team up to get Cass' sister Morgan, they also catch the Commander in their soapy trap. With the spacecraft pumped out, Neri and Jason venture inside. They are soon joined by Brett, who had been scrubbing the floors on ORCA for his role in the practical joke on Morgan. Inside the ship, the trio come across someone in a sealed chamber, still alive. UBRI begins searching for evidence of the spacecraft that brought Neri to Earth.

Jason and Brett are about to force the chamber open when Neri finds the controls that revive the chamber's occupant. The strange young man reveals his name is Kal and after beings shown around the island, he seems to be content to live there with Neri. Brett and Jason are surprised when Kal says he will take a subordinate role in relation to Neri, as is done on their own planet Lena Hellegren makes an unexpected appearance at UBRI forcing her father to take her home where she is finally able to convince him to let her remain with him instead of being shipped away on vacation by herself. Benny covers for a girl caught cheating on an exam and is also disqualified.

Concerned about Kal's development, Neri asks Jason to talk to him. After Neri tells him to stay on the island for his own safety, Kal disobeys Neri and follows Jason back to ORCA. Dr. Hellegren brings Lena to ORCA where she receives a cold reception from Jason and Brett and refuses to listen to Brett when he tells her about some of the bad things her father has been responsible for. Brett, Benny and Cass are given diving classes when another of their practical jokes backfires on Morgan. After their first lesson, Benny sees Kal aboard their boat starting the motor and then diving overboard. Benny tries to explain to Dave and Morgan that he saw someone else start the boat but no one believes him and he is accused of starting the boat himself. Hearing Benny's story, Dianne asks her boys for an explanation.

Hoping to keep Kal from making any return trips to ORCA, Jason suggests to Neri that she show him around the spaceship which he has shown interest in. Winston's inability to swim is made an issue by Kellar and UBRI threatening his job on ORCA as they want to replace him with one of their own people. Fortunately, Benny discovers a provision in the regulations forcing the commander to give Winston one week to meet the qualifications. Neri brings Jason and Brett back to the spaceship where she and Kal have discovered an interface with the ship's computer that gives Neri access the ship's logbook which was written by Kal's mother. Neri translates the message which explains the ship's crash onto the Opal Planet and reveals a mission that will require the assembly of nine pieces of "Synchronium" which, once found and put together, will create a machine with the power to heal the Earth's oceans. With the device intended to guide them to the Synchronium pieces damaged, Neri asks Jason and Brett to help her look for the Synchronium on the condition that they must not tell anyone else - not even their mother. Believing that Neri will be close by to assist him, Winston passes his swimming test, unaware she has had to turn back to return Kal to the island. UBRI's research into the arrival of Neri's spacecraft returns some interesting results putting them on the same hunt for the Synchronium.

Neri goes to ORCA to see how Jason and Brett are proceeding with their search for the Synchronium only to be disappointed to learn the boys have not even started. Dianne takes the opportunity to ask her to help Winston with his impending dive test which she gladly agrees to do, delaying her return to the island. When Neri doesn't return on time, Kal goes to ORCA to find her. Once there, Kal manages to get signed up for Morgan's new fitness class (she's very impressed with him) and even gets a date with Marika, which Jason manages to speed him through. Neri helps Winston through his dive test simply by getting him to believe in himself. After Lena's visit to UBRI, Kellar warns her that her curiosity may reveal things about her father she might not want to know.

Neri awakes on the island to find Kal missing, he's gone to ORCA. Jason and Brett introduce Kal to Diane and Winston. Shortly after, Neri arrives and tells Diane about UBRI's plans to use explosives on the ocean floor in their construction.

Jason takes Brett to Neri's underwater cave where she emplores the boys to find another piece of the Synchronium. Scouring H.E.L.E.N.'s database, Brett locates another piece of Synchronium and interrupts Jason's cadet training emergency drill to tell him the news. The boys race to tell Neri the news and bring Kal back to ORACA to pinpoint the Synchronium's exact location. Lena is back on ORCA seeking clarification about her father. She learns nothing from Brett but does meet Kal. Jason, Brett, and Neri go in search of the second piece of Synchronium. It is located in the desert far inland requiring them to travel by camel. UBRI has also located the piece and have mounted an expedition to retrieve it. Arriving after UBRI who have already recovered the Synchronium, the trio is spotted and pursued by Kellar whose vehicle they are able to elude on their sure-footed camels. While studying the Synchronium, Dr. Hellegren discovers that it generates a tidal force.

Neri moves her Synchronium piece to the secret underwater cave to keep it safe. Benny's father chastises him for spending time with Brett and Cass instead of studying. Cass finds a young boy hiding on ORCA. He tells her his family was refused refugee status and were being sent home when he left the ship and swam to ORCA. Cass decides to keep him a secret and brings him food but it isn't long before he is discovered by others and the Commander is forced to turn him over to immigration officials. Brett and Benny go in search of sunken treasure but when a valuable piece of equipment falls overboard, Benny dives after it and runs out of oxygen. Charlie calls to Neri who comes and rescues Benny. Afterwards, Brett is forced to tell Benny about Neri and Kel and implores Benny not to say anything about Neri. When questioned by the Commander about the incident, Benny lies to keep Neri a secret. Lena is able to gain access to her father's files about Neri.

A trip to ORCA prompts a discussion between Neri and Kal about feelings. Cass is beginning to remember her time on Neri's island in her dreams. Brett takes Benny to the island to see Neri and Kal. Jason arrives having discovered the location of another piece of Synchronium but it is deep in the ocean and they will have to wait until the following day to look for it. However, Neri is anxious to retrieve it and sets out by herself. The boat taking Brett and Benny back to ORCA breaks down, but with strict instructions from Neri not to return to ORCA, Kal abandons them in the middle of the ocean. Fortunately, Charlie alerts Neri, who was unsuccessful in her attempt at retrieving the Synchronium, and she comes to their rescue. Back on ORCA, Brett is hassled by Moose, a bully who wants Brett's new satellite navigation unit. With Jason and Brett assisting her, Neri is able to retrieve the Synchronium from the ocean depths just moments before UBRI arrives on the scene. Brett is once again confronted by Moose but Kal, acting on the lesson he received on loyalty after abandoning Brett and Benny, defends Brett against Moose and his cohorts.

Neri continues to teach Kal about feelings. Cass is still having nightmares about her experience on Neri's island but now she remembers Brett being there as well. Lena overhears her father and Kellar making plans to create a news bulletin to lure some of the kids from ORCA out to an island in an effort to find out what they know about the alien device. Jason is uneasy about his helicopter flight test and is unable take the controls. Kal searches the spaceship for a gift left to him by his parents. When Benny and Brett arrive, they find him playing a strange musical instrument and crying prompting Brett to explain to Kal why people cry. Seeing the news bulletin created by UBRI, Brett and Neri head off to the remote island hoping to retrieve what they suspect to be another piece of Synchronium. Lena travels to ORCA to warn the Bates brothers about the trap and although she is too late to stop Brett, she is able to convince Jason she can be trusted and that her father has set a trap for them on the island. Needing to get to Brett and Neri quickly, Jason requests another helicopter test and diverts to the island to warn off Brett and Neri. Upset by his failed plan, Dr. Hellegren suspects a leak in the UBRI chain of command but Kellar is the one who learns it was Lena who tipped off their plan.

Neri receives a message in a dream from her sister, Mera, warning her that time is running out to save the planet's oceans. Neri travels to ORCA and warns Dianne that UBRI's development must be stopped. Kellar informs Dr. Hellegren about her suspicions about Lena, but he won't listen to her and tells Kellar to not question his daughter as part of her investigation into identifying the UBRI spy. To ensure Lena's continued help, Jason is forced to tell Lena all about Neri and their search for the Synchronium. Dr. Hellegren orders the construction of ORCA City to be sped up by increasing the yield of the explosives. Cass is sent to a psychiatrist to help her understand her dreams but what she remembers is quickly reported back to Dr. Hellegren who is invited to observe her next session. When Cass returns to ORCA with a restored memory, she confronts Jason and Brett, demanding to know the truth. She is taken to meet Neri and promises to keep her a secret and help in the search for the Synchronium. Presented with evidence of his daughter's spying, Dr. Hellegren confronts Lena. She admits what she's been doing and leaves home after he says she is no longer his daughter. Kal experiences fear when Neri is threatened by UBRI's powerful underwater explosions. Winston believes further detonations by UBRI could threaten the stability of a nearby fault line and cause earthquakes.

HELEN is not being cooperative in the kids' search for more pieces of the Synchronium. Meanwhile, UBRI has located another piece. With nowhere to go after leaving home, Jason and Brett convince their mother into letting Lena stay with them on ORCA.

Winston is excited about the arrival of Camilla Sabato to ORCA, she is a science writer but more importantly, a close friend. Winston gives her a tour of ORCA but afterward Brett catches her making a secret transmission to Dr. Hellegren telling him that she will be looking for information about his "Ocean Girl." Brett informs Dianne and Winston who confront Camilla and see to it that she leaves ORCA. Kal finishes at the top of his class in a fitness competition and returns to the island to tell Neri but finds her once again preoccupied with Jason. Kal's jealousy surfaces again and after telling Jason that he is no longer welcome on the island, Kal moves back into the spaceship. Neri is concerned about the condition of a nearby coral reef. After skipping out on a party that Sallyanne asked him to go to, Jason travels out to the site with Neri to gather evidence to prove that ocean life is being destroyed by UBRI's construction of ORCA City. A large earthquake strikes, opening the fault line near ORCA.

Dianne demands that a tribunal hearing be convened to stop UBRI's development project but Dr. Hellegren argues that there is no connection between the earthquake and UBRI's explosions. Lena locates another piece of the Synchronium and Brett and Cass are sent to Neri's island to get Kal to pinpoint its location. Venturing inland to retrieve the piece, Neri, Brett and Cass encounter a farm family with a blind daughter. Discovering the Synchronium capsule to be empty, the trio are surprised to find that the Synchronium piece is a prized possession of the daughter, Patti. After spending time with Neri, Patti gives her the Synchronium. Encountering her father on ORCA, Lena threatens to go public with his work if he makes life difficult for her on the station. Dianne is upset to discover that canisters of radioactive material are being stored in the school section of ORCA. When a tremor strikes, the canisters break open threatening Benny who is alone in the otherwise deserted computer lab. Jason goes against regulations to rescue him and afterward is praised by Commander Wellington who chastises Morgan for her strictly "by-the-books" response to the emergency.

Brett tries unsuccessfully to get Kal to come out of the spaceship. Dianne is granted a tribunal hearing to voice her concerns about the effect UBRI's construction is having on the fault line. During the hearing a tremor hits resulting in panic on ORCA and causing Charlie to beach himself. Neri recruits her friends on ORCA to help rescue him but when Jason leaves his post to help out, Sallyanne is forced to cover for him when the Commander asks her where he is. The tribunal allows UBRI to continue their construction on ORCA City, but without blasting. Needing additional help to free Charlie, Jason recruits Winston who helps place a sling under Charlie so that he can be towed off the sandbar. Kal comes to ORCA looking for Brett but ends up talking with Sallyanne since everyone else is out helping Charlie. When he returns to the island, Kal asks Neri why he wasn't asked to help with Charlie. Unhappy with her answer, he walks away. On a secluded sandbar, Kal is observed and photographed by UBRI.

Kellar shows Dr. Hellegren the footage she took of Kal on the sandbar, he quickly recognizes who Kal is and wants to capture him. After another of Kal's outbursts at Jason, Neri tells him to change his attitude or leave the island, Kal chooses the latter.

Neri continues to look for Kal but Jason thinks he is just trying to teach them a lesson by staying away. Lena locates a piece of the Synchronium but without Kal to pinpoint its location, she must rely on H.E.L.E.N. to calculated possible sites. Neri receives another warning from Mera telling of a new danger. Dr. Hellegren finally gets Kal talking about his island, Neri, Jason and ORCA. Kellar leads a UBRI team to retrieve the Synchronium piece while Dr. Hellegren stays behind to continue talking with Kal. The kids locate the Synchronium piece at the bottom of a seaside cliff and Jason repels down to retrieve it as UBRI, who have been observing the kids, close in. His friends must flee with Neri to ensure her safety, forcing Jason to hand over the Synchronium to Kellar who reveals to him that UBRI has Kal. Dr. Hellegren gives Kal the choice to leave or to stay with him and work towards possessing the Synchronium themselves. Captivated by the power he is being offered, Kal accepts Hellegren's proposal to work together.

Kal is living in the lap of luxury at UBRI, his room filled with toys and games. Kellar, making reference to his failed relationship with Lena, angers Dr. Hellegren by suggesting he is treating Kal like an "obedient son." Hoping to find out where UBRI is keeping Kal, Cass and Brett take to the ORCA air ducts hoping to break into UBRI's offices on OCRA. Discovered by UBRI security, they must quickly retreat at which time Brett loses his ID. UBRI identifies their intruders from Brett's lost ID but Dr. Hellegren decides to seize the opportunity and create a scenario for Kal to be returned to the island. Preparing to release Kal, Dr. Hellegren gives him his orders: he is to discover where Neri keeps the pieces of Synchronium she has found and report back to him. Hellegren also teaches Kal how to lie, and promises Kal control of the island if he cooperates. Unaware their trespass has been discovered, Cass and Brett return to the air ducts in another attempt to learn where Kal is being kept. Kellar is prepared and makes sure the two can hear her as she describes in detail UBRI's plans to relocate Kal. Using this information, the kids are able to "rescue" Kal from the UBRI truck transporting him. Once Kal is back on the island, Brett says he is glad things are back to normal unaware that at the same time, Kal is swimming out to talk to Dr. Hellegren who is disguised as a nearby fisherman.

Neri has Kal promise not to leave the island again. Lena uses HELEN to locate another piece of the Synchronium. Mera appears to Neri to again warns her that time is running out.

The cadets' exam results are in and after looking at her's, Sallyanne tells Jason he would be better off with another partner. Mera reveals to Neri and her friends that Charlie's song is the trigger that activates the Synchronium. Overhearing this important piece of information, Kal quickly goes to tell Dr. Hellegren. Hellegren meanwhile has to contend with his financiers who are anxious for results. Mera is taken to ORCA and introduced to Benny, Cass and Lena. Neri and Mera talk Lena into stealing the key her father wears around his neck - it is the only way to gain access to the Synchronium that UBRI has. Lena reluctantly agrees and the three girls make a plan to retrieve the key. Outside the Hellegren home, Kal makes a surprise appearance wanting to help. Lena gets them into the house but just as Neri is about to get the key, Kal intentionally knocks over a vase waking Dr Hellegren. They are able to escape but do not get the key. Disappointed about her scholastic performance, Sallyanne wants to quit but decides against it after saving Jason when one of ORCA's bulkheads is breached after another tremor.

When a large earthquake strikes, H.E.L.E.N. is kept busy analysing data, preventing Lena from accessing her to look for more pieces of Synchronium. In an effort to learn just what UBRI knows, Cass and Benny sneak into the UBRI offices on ORCA where they overhear Dr. Hellegren talking to a Mr. Lee about a possible trade for a piece of the Synchronium that Mr. Lee has. Eager to get this new piece before Hellegren (and without any help from Jason and Brett), Cass, Benny and Lena gain entry into Mr. Lee's office building. Cass and Lena are caught by security but Benny, unsure about whether or not to flee the building, goes back and rescues the girls from Mr. Lee's office. Jason and Brett are told about the Synchronium in Mr. Lee's possession and make plans to steal it when Mr. Lee brings it to ORCA to give to Dr. Hellegren. Meanwhile, Brett goes back to the island to search through the spaceship one last time; he is joined by Mera and Kal. Separating himself from Mera and Brett, Kal follows Neri hoping to discover where she hides the Synchronium but Charlie warns Neri and Kal is discovered. Back on the island, Mera once again voices her disproval of Kal's actions. Winston is honoured by having the newly discovered fault line named after him.

The growing frequency of the seismic tremors causes Commander Wellington to call for voluntary evacuations of ORCA personnel. Cass tells Morgan to "drop dead" when Morgan gets after Jason for wanting to skip a survey dive. Jason's dive with Morgan ends abruptly when she is stung by a stonefish. Morgan is rushed back to ORCA for medical treatment where Cass, feeling guilty for what she said earlier to her sister, stays by her bedside. Encouraged by Lena, Sallyanne tries to talk to Jason about how she feels about him but he dismisses her to join Neri and his friends who are preparing to intercept the Synchronium transfer from Mr. Lee to Dr. Hellegren. Brett stows away on the UBRI vessel and when they are out at sea, he disables the craft and steals the Synchronium piece. Brett jumps overboard where Neri and Mera are waiting just as the Coast Guard (alerted by Benny about UBRI's involvement with Opal smuggling) arrives to board the UBRI vessel. Having lost another piece of the Synchronium, Dr. Hellegren tells Kal that his most important job now is to locate where the Neri is hiding the Synchronium.

The effects of the new "Winston Seth" fault line are being felt all around the Pacific Rim as evacuations on ORCA are underway. Mera grows more suspicious of Kal's frequent disappearances but Neri once again defends his behaviour. After Sallyanne confronts Jason, Lena tells him that he should tell Sallyanne about Neri as she is his only close friend who doesn't know about Neri. The kids venture inland to recover the final piece of Synchronium. UBRI is also searching in the area but it is Neri who locates it first. Neri gives the Synchronium piece to Jason to take to the underwater cave for safekeeping but Kal observes them and discovers the location of the cave. Kal quickly reports back to Dr. Hellegren who sets out to recover the Synchronium pieces from the cave. As Kal is bringing the pieces to the surface for Dr Hellegren, Charlie warns Neri about what is going on, but when she gets to the cave, the Synchronium is already gone. Jason decides to tell Sallyanne the truth about Neri but she doesn't believe his incredible story about a girl from outer space. With the Synchronium finally in his possession, Dr Hellegren dismisses Kal's request to uphold his side of their bargain, while on the island, Neri tells Jason and Brett the consequences of the Synchronium being used by the wrong people.
