A look at how the British Empire was represented in famous works of literature, including Robinson Crusoe, the first-ever novel published in English, in 1719 which dealt heavily with slavery. Slavery, colonialism and the Empire seemed to go hand in hand as in Harriet Beecher Stowe's 'Uncle Tom's Cabin' and Toni Morrison's 'Beloved'. Though the Empire was widely celebrated, other writers questioned it more deeply like Rudyard Kipling's Kim.
