Nick returns to school after summer vacation and discovers that the middle school is now the Gerald R. Ford High School for troubled teenagers and butts heads with the new principal, Dr. Emerson.

When Marco is too upset about the end of his relationship to complete a poetry assignment, Nick tells him about his own failed relationship in order to relate to Marco better, but things go wrong when he unwittingly asks Marco's former girlfriend out on a date.

Nick at Night

When Nick makes excuses about his students' mischievous behavior, Mezz warns him that they won't respect him as a teacher since they view him as a friend. Nick finds out that what Mezz said is true after discovering Sophia at a nightclub and makes her leave, so the students get their revenge on Nick by misbehaving during Dr. Emerson's evaluation of him.

Tasha Tells All

After Dr. Emerson adds a newsletter to the curriculum, Nick asks his students to write articles that are important to them and Tasha surprises everyone with her story about living in a housing project, but after Nick discovers she made up the story to impress her classmates, he tries to help her out. Meanwhile, after Jordan writes about his relationship with Sophia, Marco demands that he proves it by bringing Sophia's bra to school. Miles wears a nicotine patch to experience what it's like to quit smoking cigarettes.

Nick auditions to be the host of an local educational television show, but is surprised when the producer chooses Mezz over him; meanwhile, Jordan plans to make a school calendar featuring his female classmates in skimpy outfits.

After Sophia loses her part-time job at a fast food restaurant, Nick helps her get a new job working at a cosmetics counter, but she loves the job so much, she decides to quit school to work instead.

Dr. Love

After Dr. Emerson asks Nick to teach a seminar on human sexuality, Nick faces trouble when Tasha's parents think that he told their daughter it's okay to have sex with her boyfriend; meanwhile, Marco defends Miles from a bully, but later when Miles purposely seeks out another confrontation with the bully, Marco refuses to help Miles out, teaching him not to take advantage of a favor.

Blast from the Past

Nick's former geometry teacher Mr. Farb is hired to teach at Gerald R. Ford High School. Meanwhile, Sophia convinces Marco to build a birdhouse for Yaroker's class, but Tasha believes that girls are just as capable at carpentry as boys are.

When Jordan starts arriving to school late fails to do his homework, ignores his friends and drinks alcohol at school Nick discovers that the reason for Jordan's behavior is because his parents are divorcing. Meanwhile, Dr. Emerson announces a carnival at school in order to help with the school's budget crisis.

Sophia ignores her friends' study group to join a violent gang instead, but she has to decide who her real friends are after the gang's initiation requires her to assault Tasha. Meanwhile, Nick becomes infatuated with the attractive school nurse.

When Jordan becomes the star of the school wrestling team when he qualifies for a lower weight class, but he has to literally starve himself before each contest. Meanwhile, Dr. Emerson must act as a referee between Sophia and Tasha, who insult each other by using the school newspaper as their forum.
