LaGuardia Airport is surrounded by roads and the Hudson River, so designers must utilise space by building as tall as possible, install drainage to prevent floods, add a world first, twin 450 foot long pedestrian bridges that allow aircraft to pass beneath, and a huge 120 foot long escalator, which will be needed to move passengers between floors.

The pile foundation for the new concourse runs into trouble, while New York iron workers struggle to connect their biggest truss yet, which will form the terminal's grand entrance. New gates must be built before they tear down the old or operations will grind to a halt, and a flock of birds threaten to bring down aircraft.

The new LaGuardia Airport is expected to be state of the art, and on schedule, but the worst snowstorm in five years brings construction and operations to a stop. The new high tech baggage screening and handling systems, key to the new airport operations, must be installed, while twin pedestrian bridges need to be completed in Terminal B in time for the grand opening.
