The crime drama begins Season 5 where the fourth season ended, with Deeks (Eric Christian Olsen) and Sam (LL Cool J) being tortured by notorious arms dealer Isaak Sidorov (Timothy V. Murphy) who wants them to admit they are federal agents. Soon, Sidorov brings in Sam's wife Michelle (Aunjanue Ellis), who is working undercover, and orders her to shoot Sam and Deeks to prove her loyalty. Meanwhile, Callen (Chris O'Donnell) and the rest of the team attempt to track down Sidorov's nuclear weapons. Later, the team investigate the kidnapping case of a man who claims to be Callen's father; and the threat of a terrorist attack on Los Angeles reconnects Hetty (Linda Hunt) with someone from her past, but the relationship jeopardizes her career. As for Kensi (Daniela Ruah), she and Granger (Miguel Ferrer) travel to Afghanistan to investigate a federal agent's murder. But while there she disappears and is feared to be a captive of the Taliban.
