Victor Dean, a copywriter of slogans at an advertising firm falls down a spiral staircase at work ans suffers a broken neck. An ambiguous letter that he left causes the company owner to suspect foul play, and he hires Wimsey to investigate. Assuming another identity, Lord Peter goes undercover and becomes a member of the firm.

While masquerading as a poor relative working as a copyrighter during the day investigating the Dean death, Wimsey returns to his real identity in the evening. He is invited to a high society costume party in the which he cuts a mysterious figure as a Harlequin and begins a flirtatious relationship with the promiscuous and attractive Dian de Momerie, who is part of a ring selling drugs to the hoi polloi. Her fast lane lifestyle causes Wimsey to fend off her attempts at seduction.

Jaded Dian de Momerie and Todd Milligan crash the Duchess of Denver's cocktail party, and Lord Peter is tasked by his sister-in-law with throwing them out. Dian thinks she recognizes Wimsey as Harlequin, but he successfully convinces her that he is really his look-alike black sheep cousin Bredon and hints that he is a drug dealer also. Wimsey later meets the pair in his Harlequin/Bredon identity and proposes an alliance of their drug-dealing operations. Meanwhile Parker tracks down a suspect who passed cocaine in a pub to the Natural History Museum.
