Sarah Desjardins, to all outward appearances, is an engaging, highly intelligent, well-adjusted and successful woman. No one, not even Sarah herself, could have imagined the horrific childhood abuses that led to the development of a coping mechanism called Dissociative Identity Disorder, commonly known as multiple personalities. The dissociative aspect is thought to be a coping mechanism -- the person literally shuts off or dissociates himself from a situation or experience that's too violent, traumatic, or painful to assimilate with his conscious self. Dissociative disorders are characterized by an involuntary escape from reality characterized by a disconnection between thoughts, identity, consciousness and memory.

Richard Roberts wasn't a street junkie, buying illegal drugs, and getting high for the fun of it. He was just a guy, serving in our military, who was prescribed some very potent medication for a serious and painful back injury, which led to a 12-year battle with addiction and the law. Richard shares his personal struggle with drug addiction, homelessness, the legal system...and getting the benefits he was entitled to.

For those left behind, overcoming the gut-wrenching grief from a loved one's suicide can be unbearable. The grief process is always difficult. Marina Morris was a Russian orphan who was born with cerebral palsy and brought to the United States at the age of six. Marina does not think of herself as disabled; she has NEVER has. That's mostly because she was brought up by parents who didn't see her as disabled, and who would not allow her to see herself that way. It made all the difference. Marina is a college graduate, a business professional, a public speaker, advocate, an accomplished golfer. And oh, by the way, she has cerebral palsy. Many people just don't realize the extraordinary accomplishments and the enormous progress that so-called "disabled" individuals have made in our world. The truth is that people with disabilities can-and do- participate in ALL AREAS of the American workforce. They THRIVE when they fully participate in their communities, and in turn, the communities thrive.

Like his friends, Andrew Brown started using prescription painkillers in high school. It was fun. By the time it stopped being fun, it was too late. Pills soon turned to heroin, and his life began slipping away from him. Andrew's story is a familiar one. The severity of opioid withdrawal means users rarely get clean unless they are determined and have treatment readily available. More people than ever are dying from opioid overdose; in 2016, more than 42,000 people were killed by opioids. Andrew shares his story of addiction and his road to recovery.
