  • CBS
  • Science Fiction

A science fiction series about human spaceflight set in the near future of the mid-1970s and the 1980s. The main character was the veteran astronaut Col. Edward McCauley. His career (as depicted) included the earliest human flights into space, the first flight to the Moon, several lunar landings, taking part in the construction of a Moon base and a new space station, and two failed attempts to land on Mars (depicted as an unobtainable goal for both the Americans and the Soviets throughout the series). The series had an emphasis on the dangers of the space program, with stories featuring accidents in space, technical problems, and medical emergencies or deaths for the astronauts. The series also depicted equal opportunity careers for women in the space program, with female astronauts and female scientists being commonplace.
