Former Boston PD Detective Jeff Jackson has taken a somewhat self-imposed very early retirement in he having received a gunshot wound on duty, the bullet still lodged in his back too close to the spine to remove safely, it which still occasionally causes him pain, both physically and emotionally, but the shootout which killed his partner. While he keeps in contact with his Boston PD colleagues in order to find out who shot him and killed his partner, Jeff has moved into what was his recently deceased father's beachfront house on Martha's Vineyard for a relaxed life of boating and fishing. His planned relaxed life isn't as he is called in unofficially by his father's old friend, Martha's Vineyard Police Chief Duncan Madieras, to assist in major cases the department is ill-equipped to handle on its own, mostly concerning homicides. Through it all, Jeff reconnects with his childhood friend, physician and occasional ME Dr. Zee Madieras, the Chief's daughter, the two who can admit to each other that they are falling for each other, getting together, however, which has its complications on both sides.

Injury-retired Boston PD star detective Jeff Jackson happily accepts a well-paid short security job mediated by his youth friend and doc Zee's father, Martha's Vineyard police chief Duncan Madieras, at the festive return of the famous heirloom Lakshmi Emeralds, mounted in gold as a broach worth $5 million, to Pendray Inn, stolen from hotel owner Britt Prajna's family sixty years ago. Among the guests are Culture of India Magazine reporter AJ Sharma, and Associates Auction House gemologist Victor Gaines of Gaines who recognized the emeralds when brought to Boston for appraisal by latest owners Freddy and Regina Fields, also present, with Britt's cousin, Lloyd Prajna, who plans to contest ownership, and Rebecca Lane of the Vineyard Art Museum. Furthermore, Vineyard Gazette investigative reporter Jackie Shawl and Britt's godfather, lawyer Willard Gilford, who personally receives the jewel after transport by Thornbury Securities, whose boss Mike Vinson repeats in vain an offer to recruit Jeff as fine former Boston PD colleague, having dealt with an attempted robbery on the way. The night after the flawless gala, Britt is seriously injured by a masked intruder in her home and the emeralds end up being stolen from the inn's safe, which only she and her trusted inn manager. While team Jeff investigates everyone, a murder follows.
