John and Carolyn's story starts near the end as they and Carolyn's sister Lauren are seen in 1999 taking off in a private plane piloted by John. Fast reverse seven years before they met or he knowing of her. John is having problems being under the microscope of being a Kennedy, including formerly being named People's Sexiest Man Alive, which makes his recent failure of the New York bar exam, for the second time, even more seemingly illuminating to the world as him as a dumb hunk. His sex life is also under that microscope in being every straight woman and gay man's wet dream, his public recent split with Daryl Hannah not leading to a river of tears for Jackie who never approved of her. And beyond the occasional interactions with the top man, mostly from afar, Carolyn generally hates her job at Calvin Klein as her boss treats her as a peon "salesgirl". But she does come to the attention of Calvin in she having impressed an important client at a styling. John and Carolyn meet at a Calvin Klein charity function she "crashes". While his eyes immediately lock on her, she lets him know that she is not intimidated by him in that she will expect nothing less from him than she would anyone else. But when he is finally able to break down at least the first wall of her shield against him, their romance may not proceed any further with the return of someone to New York.

What looked to be the start of a possible relationship in John and Carolyn's first date being more than good takes a turn with Daryl's return to New York and the very publicly recorded account of their reconciliation. Probably still feeling at a loss and just needing some human comfort, Carolyn falls back into the arms of someone from her past, who she feels could fill a professional void. Regardless, John and Daryl's relationship still has some major hurdles, some stemming from previously unresolved issues such as the somewhat open animosity Jackie shows toward Daryl. In that vein, Berman is less than happy that John is taking the weekend off while Berman has been sleeping at the office for weeks working every day. That weekend is for John and Carolyn to spend in Hyannisport so that Carolyn can meet the family, most specifically who is now considered the de facto family matriarch upon Jackie's passing, John's controlling Aunt Ethel. Despite John not having returned to the apartment since what he considered his short term stay at the Stanhope, neither John or Carolyn regard the state of their joint life as having separated. In marriage counseling, they react strongly to the term "separation" which brings the reality of their lives into some focus. Making an effort to come back together, Carolyn decides to accompany John to a Kennedy wedding on Martha's Vineyard, John in the process having previously offered Lauren a ride to the island in his private plane, that flight which would end up being their ultimate demise. John, Carolyn and Lauren's deaths will either widen the divide that has existed between Ann Marie and the Kennedys as a collective, most specifically Caroline, or bring them closer together in grief.
