The threat by a notorious hacker named Thrillseeker to crash the Starbird military satellite communications system brings the team to Las Vegas for DefCon, a hackers' convention. An initial effort to send Roland undercover to retrieve the codes being used is interrupted by another team of FBI agents, who, not realizing that he is working for Level 9, beat him up as they take him in. Frustrated by the attack and the failure to retrieve usable codes, Roland wanders onto the convention floor where he meets Tonya, an ex-girlfriend who expresses regret at having left him. Tonya soon attracts the team's attention, however, when she produces the glasses Roland was wearing when he was attacked - glasses which had also subsequently shown images of hackers working to bring down Starbird. Working with Jack Wiley, a DIA agent also assigned to protect Starbird, the team tracks down and captures a group of hackers in the desert as they attempt to upload a virus into the system, only to find that the "virus" is junk and that the entire hack was a diversion designed to throw the agents off of Thrillseeker's real goal: robbing the casino where the convention was taking place. Rushing back the team succeeds in stopping the heist. The next morning, Roland confronts Tonya, who is Thirllseeker, as she attempts to escape and turns her over to the authorities.
