Waterworlds

Wed, Feb 23, 2000 50 mins

"Waterworlds" (Part 1 of three) explores life in the Amazon itself, home to 1300 known species of freshwater fish (and perhaps as many more that haven't been discovered yet). It's also home to a number of hungry predators, including dolphins, herons and otters that grow to six feet in length. But some fish can fight back. For instance, a red-bellied piranha is seen striking on a fallen heron. Rod Steiger narrates.

The Land Reborn

Wed, Apr 5, 2000 50 mins

"There's an annual battle for dominance between water and land" in Amazonia, says narrator Rod Steiger. "The Land Reborn" (Part 2) looks at life during the dry season, when the rain forest isn't submerged. "Predators lurk everywhere," Steiger says, and one of them, the jaguar, is seen pursuing prey on both land and water. Jaguars are lovers as well as fighters, and they're also seen mating, as are anacondas---in a "mènage a 13"---12 males vying for the affections of one 18-foot female.

The Big Top

Wed, Apr 12, 2000 50 mins

The conclusion explores life under the Amazon rain forest's dense canopy---home, scientists say, to half the world's species (300 species of termites alone). Among the larger species seen in this "cornucopia of nature" are monkeys, sloths, parakeets, macaws and harpy eagles, a fearsome aerial predator. And, of course, there are the trees, which need to pollinate to propagate. Seen here: the role of bats, raccoons and kinkajous in pollinating, and the role of fruit in getting them to do it.
