Episode 1
The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway is a line so close to the people that it flows like a river through their lives. The relationship between the train and the people is changing, however, as a new generation of Gurkhas populates these hills, demanding an independent state and fighting for a new identity as they journey into the modern Indian world.
Episode 2
The Nilgiri Mountain Railway is a romantic line, popular with honeymooners and driven by love and devotion as well as steam. It chugs through the south Indian jungle up to a hill station, once known as Snooty Ooty.
Episode 3
In Shimla, the Raj built churches, schools, a town hall and the railway and left behind their symbols of empire and the ethos of duty, loyalty and ambition. We see how the town of Shimla has grown since the British left and we follow a few railway employees as they aspire to promotion. Tourists like to visit when there is snow, and so at the end of one winter, they wait for a snowfall, they pray for it, as they need the tourist rupees. Shimla is in the foothills of the Himalayas, the Raj liked to spend the summers there as it was so much cooler than down on the plains. So in the summer India was ruled from there.
