If the early buzz about this latest original drama from ESPN was lagging, it got a convenient boost from actor Tom Sizemore's encounters with the police blotter. His checkered present could only have helped him portray the sleazy past of Pete Rose, who opens this biopic gambling and doesn't let anyone or anything curtail his habit. If the 15-year-old details of Rose's lifetime ban on baseball have grown sketchy, Hustle refreshes them like a lifted rock shedding light on worms. At the very least, the portrayal of Rose is more vivid and moving than ESPN's film bios on Bobby Knight and Bear Bryant. The movie is followed by a live call-in show (hosted by Jeremy Schaap) that debates Rose's faint Hall of Fame hopes.
