The Spanish Armada

Tue, Jul 7, 2026

It is the end of May 1588 when the Spanish King Philip II sends an "invincible fleet" to the north of Europe. In the United Republic of the Netherlands, the popular uprising has already been fairly well suppressed. But England continues to harass Spain's colonies all over the world with constant raids. Philip II thinks he can quickly bring the English Queen Elizabeth to her knees by launching a massive attack on her fleet. However, the 130 heavily armed ships of the Armada encounter the brilliant admiral Sir Francis Drake. Almost five hundred years later, it is still a mystery how Drake was able to defeat his Spanish rival admiral Alonso Duke of Medina Sidonia three times. During the bloody sea battles on July 29, August 4, and August 7, the Armada is repeatedly defeated. To make matters worse, the battered remnants of the fleet are struck by a fierce storm during their retreat. Of the once so mighty and proud Armada, ultimately no more than a motley collection of 67 badly damaged ships remain. The question remains how this could have been possible. The answer provides a new interpretation of history.
